Celphone call affect brain activity
The truth about the celphone’s effect on brains has long been ruled out as a myth. Big telephone manufacturers advertently denied such allegations claiming that it only aims to defame their product. However, a recent study surfaced to ascertain that cellphone indeed has effects on the brain activities. This study is conducted by Dr. Nora Volkow of the National Institutes of Health and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Recent study divulged that prolonged use of cellphone could have concrete effects on the brain. Spending a continuous 50 minutes call with a cellphone close to your ear is enough to change brain cell activity in the part of the brain closest to the antenna. The study disclosed that the brain reacts to electromagnetic fields caused by wireless phone signals. Although measures only in weak quantity, the electromagnetic radiation from cellphones could affect brain activity but it does not show clear indication that it could lead to cancer. The finding simply stresses that the human brain is sensitive to electromagnetic radiation from cellphone exposures.
Volkow’s team had studied 47 people who had brain scans while a cellphone was turned on for 50 minutes and another while the phone was turned off. While there was no overall change in brain metabolism, they found a 7 percent increase in brain metabolism in the region closest to the cellphone antenna when the phone was on. Experts said the results were intriguing, but urged that they be interpreted with caution.
The result however remains inconclusive. It does not state if the effect is harmful or not. It simply shows the connected effect of being exposed in prolonged cellphone usage. It could not be related to brain cancer as some study tries to find out. Wireless cellphone signals also do not have any implication on the person’s health. But many researchers suggest that continued study should be conducted to link celphone usage to possible health risk.
John Walls, a spokesman for CTIA-The Wireless Association, an industry group, said the scientific evidence so far “has overwhelmingly indicated that wireless devices, within the limits established by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), do not pose a public health risk or cause any adverse health effects.”
But Volkow and her fellow researchers are still not complacent. She said that the findings suggest the need for more study to see if cellphones have a negative effect on brain cells. But she is not taking any chances. She now uses an ear phone instead of placing a cellphone next to her ear.
