Pacquiao debated RH Bill on TV

by Alethea, on Sun, May 22 2011 | No Comments

Despite squaring off with top legislators in the Philippine politics, Manny Pacquiao proved that he is fearless both inside the ring and out. He took his battle on a new level but we won‚Äôt be seeing him clad in his usual shorts and gloves. He would be clad in a formal Americana suit as he battles against the imposition of the Reproductive Health Bill. This time, he will be stating his stand on television. Manny hoped to reach out and convince people to oppose the said bill during the GMA News TV’s “RH Bill: The Grand Debate” which airs on Sunday, May 22.

Pacquiao stated that RH bills would not be an effective tool to combat poverty as opposed to President Pnoy’s claim. Manny affirmed that the main root of poverty should be eliminated and that is graft and corruption in the government.

“Sana piliin natin yung hindi labag sa utos ng Panginoon. Walang sinabi kung ilan lang dapat ang anak. Ang solusyon sa problema ay sugpuin ang kurapsyon at magkaisa tayong lahat,” Pacquiao said during the show’s taping at GMA Network studios on Tuesday, May 17.

“Sa ngayon pa lang, wala pa iyong RH Bill, gumagamit na iyong ibang tao ng condom o pills,” Pacquiao added.

Pacquiao is well-supported with his flamboyant and feisty Mommy Dionesia who both agreed that Filipinos should opt for a family planning method that is God-centered. He claimed that using contraceptives is certainly against the law of God. Instead of contraceptives, Manny suggested on the natural family planning which coincides with the Church’s pro-life advocacy.

“I-educate ang mga tao (on family planning) na hindi naman labag sa Panginoon. Piliin natin ang kautusan ng Diyos, hindi ang kautusan ng tao,” Pacquiao said in the debate.

Pacquiao insisted that RH bill would not fully eliminate poverty. Other laws and programs should be implemented in its stead.

“Bakit hindi na lang tayo gumawa ng batas na siyang magiging kasagutan sa kahirapan n gating bansa? Sa dami natin dito sa Kongreso ay maaaring mahanap natin ang kasagutan sa problemang ito hindi tulad ng RH Bill na sa aking pananaw ay masyadong divisive,” Pacquiao said.

Pacquiao is joined by many other scholars and experts who explained there side whether they would agree that the RH Bill be considered immoral or not. Representatives from religious, academic, women and government sectors joined the debate.

CBCP taking RH battle to court

by Alethea, on Wed, May 11 2011 | No Comments

CBCP seems to be mum on their once vocal aggression against the promoters of the RH Bill. The once powerful voice behind the Catholic Church pacified a bit as they retreated from probable talks with the Congress. Their battle takes on a more direct attack as they actively prompt their church goers against supporting the RH Bill. But, they still have a pawn to play for their fight is not yet over. They are taking their case to higher court.
CBCP insisted that they had not gotten soft with the topic and “will continue in its present track based on and consistent with [a previous pastoral letter], which is rejecting the bill in its entirety.” They deem that the RH bill is against the moral teaching of the Church and discussing its proceeding is certainly against the Law of God. Thus, “there’s also a legal action to be taken in the event of a passage,” as stated by CBCP lawyer Jo Imbong.
Seeing that they do not have the support of the President, CBCP decided to take legal action and let the court decide on the legality of implementing the much-debated bill. They hoped that at least, the Constitution would be on their side. ‚ÄúThere are many variables there. We still do not know what the final form of this piece of legislation will be in the event of its passage. We’re just thinking way, way beyond, ‚Äù stated the lawyer.
Despite of the President’s obvious support to the Bill, CBCP remained strong and unobtrusive. They are determined to fight for the moral principles that they stand for.
“In the first place, the spirit of that dialogue was for an exchange of views and the CBCP had already expressed its views directly to the Executive branch…The CBCP had made it clear that they are objecting to the administrative agenda embodied in that bill because it fosters an attitude that is hostile to life, to new life as a matter of fact…,” Imbong added.
Wit this, the Church firmly asserts its place as the leading institution to remind and influence the public least it goes the wrong way. RH Bill is one of those situation.
“As a matter of fact, the church has to stand on its views. It will continue to participate in the public square, it will speak the language of the public square,” she said

Iglesia ni Cristo supports RH Bill

by Alethea, on Tue, Apr 26 2011 | 1 Comment

More and more Christian denominations are surfacing and vocally stating their support on the controversial Reproductive Bill that is highly ratified in the Congress. Despite the Roman Catholic’s vigilant disapproval on the bill, President Benigno Aquino gained allies as Iglesia ni Cristo, one of the most influential denomination in the country steps up and proclaim their support for the passing of the bill.

Roman Catholic’s high ranking officers had widely condemned the passing of the bill along with its political supporters. They even threatened to excommunicate legislators who would vote in favour of the bill. Most legislators and senators are in hot water after this knowing that once they would be out of favour from the church, chances of them winning the next election would be slim because the church’s blessing would not be bestowed upon them. The priest’s threat is not something to be taken lightly as majority of Filipinos are staunch Catholics. As a result, most legislators are gingerly treading on the bill for fear of being demonized by the church. But upon the proclamation of the President with his view on the RH bill, priests seemed to shrink back out of view. This made those hesitant pro-advocates to surface and voiced their support for the bill and the President.

Iglesia ni Cristo is the first denomination to air publicly their support stating that the Catholic’s alternative of natural family planning is immoral. INC stood firm on their belief that the bill is truly pro-life, pro-poor, and pro-national development and should therefore be passed. They also take a swipe with the Catholic’s natural family planning in the statement addressed to the House population and family relations committee chairman Rep. Rogelio Espina. According to their Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo, the natural family planning is a contradiction of the actual teachings in the Bible.

“These methods are not only unnatural and ineffective but they also are immoral, since they contradict the commandment that God has given to married couples. The Bible instructs married couples not to deprive one another of intimate marital relations for long, extended period of time,” Manalo said.

“Further, any abstinence at all for a married couple is supposed to be with the mutual consent of husband and wife and not for the purpose of preventing pregnancies,‚Äù he said.

Many sects and people had noted previously on the Catholic’s seeming tyranny on the imposition of the bill. They resorted to treats and religious dominion just to push through with their plans. Many pro-advocates noted how it was uncannily alike to the traditional Spanish friars who once exercised absolute power to get things done. Still, majority of the Filipinos are hoping for the bill since it is already long overdue and very much needed.

Some Catholic priests and Christian sectors support RH Bill

by Alethea, on Fri, Apr 1 2011 | No Comments

Contrary to the common belief that religious sectors are against the Reproductive health bill, many churches pledged their support on the implementation of the highly contested bill. These groups mostly come from the Protestant and other sectors which opposes the Catholic imposition to junk the RH Bill. They took up a stand and readily backed the said bill.

Many church leaders representing their Christian churches gathered to show their support on the bill in a press conference. They criticized the Catholic church for severely manipulating and influencing their church member against the bill. Bishop Efraim Tendero from the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches stated that the people should go by evidence and not by ecclesiastical declaration when choosing their family planning method. Another church leader Bishop Rodrigo Tano from Interfaith Partnership for the Promotion of Responsible Parenthood claimed that there is no Biblical basis which states that artificial means of contraception is immoral.

Bishop Oscar Cruz contained his statement about the other churches stand stating that not all Christian churches in the Philippines are in favour of the bill. Many sectors are also actively joining the Catholic Church in their refusal to accept the RH bill. Their support was shown when the Catholic Church orchestrated a national prayer rally that condemns the bill. Despite this, the Catholic church do not have the unified support of all its member. There are also other Catholic sects who are openly amenable for the imposition of the bill. One of this is the group Catholic for RH.

The Catholic for RH group stated that they have the secret support of many priests and nuns. They added that many of them refused to speak out in fear that they will be upbraided by the church hierarchy.

Bishop Cruz admitted that there are indeed some priests who are not in one with the Catholic’s goal but he stated that they are only few and is not a problem to the whole Catholic Church.
