PNoy’s new Porsche much criticised

by Alethea, on Thu, Jan 13 2011 | 3 Comments

Despite buying it as a third hand, President Aquino was still met with much disapproval when he decided to purchase a luxury 2007 Porsche car. It was noted that the bachelor president was very proud of his recent property acquisition but he humbly stated that he is not “flaunting” it. The said disapproval of the critics was due to the fact that the government should face austerity measure amidst the turbulent and unstable economy of the nation. Buying the said car worth 4.5 million pesos seemed to be untimely and inappropriate in such time of adversity. The Porsche is a bit too flashy and extravagant thereby eliciting much distaste among the critics.

Palace spokesperson Edwin Lacierda justified the purchase of the sports car. He explained that the car was bought with the president’s own personal money after ditching his old BMW car. He further stressed that the amount is a depreciated value of the actual selling price thus prompting the president to buy it. In addition, PNoy had immediately sold his old car and used the money to buy his newest much loved Porsche. Lacierda also has high hopes that the car will not be used to sow intrigues or judge the President. He even appealed for respect for the privacy of the President.

When asked about the car, the President proudly stated that it was a good buy because the sports car has a mileage of only 10,000 kilometers. He jokingly added that he might not be able to add more to the mileage because he is often confined with his duty in the Malacanang. The car seemed to have sparked further curiosity as to whether the President would be using it on his dates as a means of impressing the ladies. Some critics spawned an idea that the car could somehow alleviate the luckless love life of the president. A flashy car could indeed work wonders in wooing a lady.

The president quickly dismissed the idea of his car being a show-off toy. He stated that he just wants to use it in order to relax at times. “Kung maaliwalas naman po at nakaka-relax tayo paminsan-minsan, siguro naman po kapaki-pakinabang [Porsche] ‘pag gumagawa tayo ng desisyon (I want to relax sometimes, it could help me with my decisions),” he said.

The president is known for his car affinity among other things. He is also a proficient sharp shooter as he does target shooting as a hobby. He also enjoys playing billiards during his free time. Recently, he has been known to start biking as his newest form of exercise since one of his New Year resolutions is to keep fit. But the smoking, the steaks and the sodas are definitely there to stay.

Salary increase for government workers this 2011

by Alethea, on Sat, Jan 1 2011 | No Comments

A post Christmas announcement certainly did put a merry heart on all government workers as recent news about the salary increase was released. They will be receiving an increase in their salary this 2011. This is surely a good way to start ones year with cheer and jubilation. Speaking of a prosperity wish this 2011!

Department of Budget and Management (DBM) Local Budget Circular No. 95 signed on June 29 last year — or a day before President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo stepped down — directs all governors, mayors and barangay chairpersons to implement the salary increase in 2011. But the budget for such overlay is yet to be confirmed from the DBM. The said increase will decided by the LGU taking into the account their income revenues.

The salary increase would encompass the LGU ranging from the lowly SK chairman up to the lofty position of Congressman. Based on the DBM circular, the salary increase covers ‚Äúall positions for salaried local government unit (LGU) personnel, whether regular, contractual or casual in nature, appointive or elective, full-time or part-time.” So part-time and contractual workers would finally be meriting a just increase since they had been receiving meager income ever since.

The increase however is subject still to the income received by the LGU units. LGU units who have insufficient income due to their small jurisdiction are advised to implement a ‚Äúmodified salary schedule” to be determined by the local council, the circular stated. Local Government Unit (LGU) employees were also given salary increases last year, in accordance with the Salary Standardization Law.

The increase is said to be a continuing work of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. She was making sure that even after she had stepped down, the government workers would still benefit from the said increase.

PNoy dating Len Lopez said Kris

by Alethea, on Tue, Dec 21 2010 | No Comments

Not the one to easily zip her mouth, Kris yet again spilled the beans for us all to prey upon… the lovelife of Philippines’ most coveted bachelor none other than our President Noy himself. Kris announced the news on air during her interview with Ted Failon on radio dzMM show, “Tambalang Failon at Webb.” Kris also elaborated that PNoy did not gave her any consent to announce anything about his private life but since Kris is Kris, no one is powerful enough to gag her and keep her silent.

Kris confirms that PNoy is currently dating someone and she was introduced to the Aquino brood much to their delight. The lucky woman is said to be Len Lopez, a member of the prominent Lopez clan and a stockbroker of Deutsche Bank. Len belongs in a circle of affluent powerful people such as being a best friend to Luli Arroyo-Bernas, a daughter of former President Gloria macapagal-Arroyo. Kris is all praise about Len.

“Kasi kagabi (Sunday night) pinakilala niya na sa amin ang dini-date niya, sa kanyang mga kapatid na babae. I was so impressed. And ito I’m sure hindi magagalit si Noy, ang payat, my God! Talagang kasing payat ni Kim Chiu and very elegant,” Kris said during her interview.

Despite promising to her older brother that she would remain mum on issues about the President’s lovelife, Kris just couldn’t keep her tongue at bay. She further said that maybe PNoy won’t be angry because all she said was good things about Len Lopez.

“Siguro hindi naman [magagalit si Noy] kasi she’s not a public person. She works in a private industry. And I think in the spirit of Christmas, baka naman hanggang January ay i-regalo na kay Presidente na huwag na siyang guluhin,” she added.

The Philippine Star first published a photo of Lopez and Noynoy attending a party together early this month. The two were also spotted last month having merienda at Rockwell. This new-found report would probably now mute the truncated spark between Pnoy and Liz Uy, celebrity stylist and best friend of Kris. The President also went steady with Valenzuela City councilor Shalani Soledad, his girlfriend of 2 years. They broke up months after Noynoy won the presidency.

At least, 50-year-old bachelor President could still have a chance of not being included in the Samahan ng Malalamig ang Pasko (SMP) this season. If not, he would inevitably be voted as the president of the said federation. Hoping for the best for PNoy.

How much is the president’s salary?

by admin, on Wed, Jul 21 2010 | No Comments

Being the highest person to hold a position in the government, you might be wondering how much is the salary of the president.

When President Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III draws his first salary as President this month, he will be getting nearly 65 percent more than what his predecessor received when she was still in power.

President Aquino’s monthly salary is pegged at P95,000/month – quite a jump from P57,750/month, which was former President and now Pampanga 2nd District Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s last salary as the country’s chief executive.

In a way, PNoy has former President Arroyo to thank for his bigger pay. It was the latter who, just days before her term ended, signed Executive Order No. 900 implementing an increase in the basic pay in all government salary grades, including the President’s.

The President’s salary is equivalent to Salary Grade 33 (SG 33) – the salary grade exclusively assigned to the highest position in the Philippine government as per the Compensation and Position Classification Act of 1989 (Republic Act 6758).

Despite the raise, the President’s salary remains a paltry sum compared to the compensation of top-level executives in private firms who can earn several times more.

A check of the annual report of the publicly-listed Ayala Corporation shows that its highest-ranked officers take home salaries averaging P1.3 million a month, excluding allowances.

According to the Finance Office of the Office of the President, the chief executive’s salary is also subject to mandatory deductions such as withholding tax, Philhealth, Pagibig, and GSIS life and retirement insurance premiums.

EO 900 was the last of a string of issuances on compensation adjustments signed by Arroyo during her term (see table). But being the incumbent President at the time they were ordered, the pay hikes did not apply to her – only to her successor, in this case President Aquino.

The 1987 Constitution explicitly states that when it comes to the President‚Äôs salary, ‚Äúno increase in said compensation shall take effect until after the expiration of the term of the incumbent during which such increase was approved.”

The first of Arroyo’s pay hike orders came five months after EDSA II installed her to the Presidency. Executive Order No. 22, signed in June 2001, granted a five percent increase on basic monthly salaries of government personnel. SG 33 as per this salary schedule was pegged at P57,750/month. Arroyo adopted this figure as her monthly salary when she won a full six-year term in 2004.

In March 2007, Arroyo approved Executive Order No. 611 further increasing the basic monthly salaries of government workers by 10 percent. Under this issuance, SG 33 increased to P63,525/month.

Another 10% increase came the following year through Executive Order No. 719. This brought up SG 33 to P69,878/month.

Last year, Congress passed the Salary Standardization Law III (SSL III) authorizing the President to carry out salary adjustments for government personnel in four yearly tranches.

The first tranche took effect in July 2009 by virtue of then President Arroyo’s Executive Order No. 811. SG 33 under this issuance is equal to P82,400/month.

EO 900, the basis of PNoy’s salary, prescribes the second tranche.

The third and fourth tranches fall within PNoy’s term. By the time the last installment is carried out, SG 33 will be equivalent to P120,000/month.

With this salary, I am just wondering how did the previous presidents build almost an empire and kingdom in the Philippines? Will PNoy be also the same? We’ll see.
