Indie films have entered the mainstream industry

Movie watching is a favorite source of entertainment for almost everybody since each movie we watch reflects our way of life depending on the story and the genre. Like a regular tele-novela, films are art works that express and reflect on the lives of people in certain situations. Even though fictional characters and locations are used, we aspire to connect with what we watch even for a short time.

The movie industry has always been populated by mainstream film makers and producers. A lot of times our local films are overthrown by outlandish films from the likes of Hollywood.

The complexity and unequalled levels of stories have caught the Filipino audience and in some ways other film makers have adapted them in order to steal away the spotlight from the foreign silver screen. Advancements in technology have given way to a wide avenue for ideas to spurt from every film author.

It seems our local film makers are having a tough time breaking into the local scene. Though once in a while, some of them make it through the stiff rivalry.

During a recent stroll to one of the biggest chain of malls, I saw a movie poster of several independent (indie) films that grabbed my attention since they made their way to the commercial cinema. Films like “Babae sa Septic Tank” and “Zombadings 1: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington” got their chance to prove that independent films can make it to the dominant movie market.

Independent film maker, Yam Laranas, shared his gratefulness for the indie film’s breakthrough in the local film industry and has gained a large amount of audience. He is currently working on a new film which he wrote the story with another indie film maker, Aloy Adlawan , entitled “The Road”.

The people’s champ Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao will be making superhero movie which he will team-up with the Fil-Am singer Nicole Scherzinger of Pussycat Dolls.  According to Wilson Tieng, Nicole had already agreed to become Pacman’s leading lady in his upcoming movie.  The working title of the film is “Whapacman” with Tieng as producer.  Wilson Tieng is the executive producer of Solar Entertainment Corporation.

The singing group Pussycat Dolls came to Manila last June 11 for their one-night concert in Araneta Coliseum.  In her interview, Nicole had revealed that there is a possible movie team-up with the Pinoy boxing champ.  Nicole had also volunteered to the sing the Philippine National Anthem in Manny Pacquiao’s upcoming fight.

On the movie Pacman will play the role of a superhero, and Nicole will be his leading lady.  Producer of the movie revealed that the half Filipino-Greek wrestler Dave Batista is also being tapped to come out in the movie.  Whapacman is intended to be an entry in the Metro Manila Film Festival this coming December.

Well, I’m just hoping that this movie would not be as bad as the Manny Pacquiao’s first film “Anak ng Kumander” which was also an entry at the Metro Manila Film Festival last 2007.
