Manny vs Mosley match: only for money said critics

by Alethea, on Wed, Dec 29 2010 | No Comments

Manny expressed his excitement and state of readiness with his incoming bout to “Sugar” Shane Mosley. The bout will be held at MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 7, a much anticipated fight warmly welcomed by Pacman’s team.

He also frankly stated that it is going to be one tough fight for him so he allotted 8 weeks of training for it unlike his previous fights where he only had 3-5 weeks. But as of the present, he is enjoying his holiday being with his family at Boracay which would then followed by a tour to Japan and Australia.

“For me, I need 8 weeks training for this fight. This is going to be a difficult fight,” Pacquiao the World Boxing Council (WBC) super welterweight and World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title holder said on Thursday. Clearly, Pacquiao’s team favour the said fight.Pacquiao’s fight promoter, Bob Arum from Top Rank promotions, has announced that the Manny will fight Mosley on May 7, 2011.

“We came to a meeting of the minds,” Arum told ESPN.com. “I believe it will be an exciting fight. Shane knows how to fight and how to deal with the speed. Manny is in for a hellacious fight. I really believe styles make fights.”

However, despite the favour of the team, the fight was met with much negative reactions by boxing critics. The fight is said to be matched not for the prowess of each fighter but rather for the call of money. A lot of critics claimed that Top Rank is merely squeezing out money while they still can from this fight knowing that Mosley’s fighting skills is ebbing and so is his popularity. He had lost his previous match with Mayweather last May and had a draw with Mora last September. Top Rank was accused of making money out of the most from Mosley whose allure is already starting to fade. Arum finds himself in the midst for most of this harsh criticism.

‚ÄúArum doesn’t care. He only wants to do what is best for himself, certainly not for boxing. He is going to put Mosley in the ring with Pacquiao solely because of name. It’s a move that will squeeze out the last gasps of Mosley’s once-outstanding career so Arum can generate another big payday while doing a disservice to real boxing fans who actually care about the matchups and not just a famous but faded name,‚Äù said ESPN.com‚Äôs Dan Rafael.

Yahoo! Sport’s Kevin Iole’s reaction was even more blunt.
“You know it’s garbage. I know it’s garbage. Heck, even Bob Arum, the guy who is putting the money up to stage the Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley fight, which will take place May 7 in Las Vegas, knows it’s garbage,” he said.

Flipino boxing critics rushed to the side of Arum to defend the Manny vs Mosley tandem. Ed Dela Vega stated that in reality, boxing match is all about money. Honor and anything else comes in second.
“Boxing after all is about money. Everything else is secondary. Otherwise, they would not call it a ‘prize fight’,” said Dela Vega.

Did Mayweather join the race called “Chicken Run”?

And the clock stops from ticking. Yet, it all turns in vain!

It was not as if the world was about to come to an end when Manny Pacquiao learned that Floyd Mayweather Jr. had opted to ignore a deadline set by promoter Bob Arum for him to make a statement regarding a proposed November 13 fight.

”I am very disappointed but we have no choice but to move on,” said Pacquiao when Arum told him the bad news.

”I have always wanted to please the (boxing) fans. That’s why I badly wanted to fight Mayweather. This is what the whole world wants to see,” said Pacquiao, who has to settle for a fight either with Mexican Antonio Margarito or Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto.

A deal can de made within the next seven or ten days, according to Arum, and this was not contested by Pacquiao’s consigliore, Mike Koncz, who is in the US attending to very important matters concerning the pound-for-pound king’s needs.

”It wouldn’t take long before we get a deal made,” said Koncz, who expects to return to Manila on Thursday with a deal in hand.

Koncz has been in constant touch with Arum as they work on the finalization of an agreement.

Four cities are bidding to host a Pacquiao fight: Abu Dhabi (in the United Arab Emirates), Dallas, Las Vegas and Monterrey (in Mexico).

If Pacquiao decides to meet Margarito, Las Vegas and Monterrey will slug it out to stage it and if it’s Cotto, it’ll be a tossup between Dallas and Abu Dhabi.

Koncz said fighting outside the US has a distinct allure since Mexico doesn’t collect taxes on purses.

”It’ll save Manny millions in taxes if he ends up fighting outside the US,” stressed Koncz, noting that 30 percent of earnings goes to the IRS.

Still, Koncz is hopeful that Pacquiao and Mayweather would eventually find each other on opposite corners.

”Maybe next year (in May 2011),” said Koncz.

Meanwhile, Top Rank is dying to know the schedule of Pacquiao, who also has a new role being Sarangani congressman, so it could map out the promotional activities being lined up.

”We have to see what the congressman’s schedule looks like (before we plan anything),” said Top Rank publicist Ricardo Jimenez. ”We have a boxer (who is) like no other,” said Jimenez.

At the end of it all, the question still remains, When will the greatest match will happen? And the question to Mayweather, Will he remain looming in his chicken barn?

The Pacquiao – Mayweather Dream Match Will Happen In Las Vegas

pacman vs mayweatherIt is confirmed that the Pacquiao vs. Mayweather match will happen in MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Both the Pacquiao and Mayweather party had agreed that Vegas is the best venue for the Dream Match of the Century. It didn’t come as a surprise that the Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather fight did land in Las Vegas; everyone is expecting that the fight will happen in Vegas.

The Cowboys Stadium in Dallas made a bid to host the biggest fight in the boxing history. The owner of the state-of-the-art Cowboys Stadium, Jerry Jones allegedly made a $25 million offer to have the fight in Cowboys Stadium. But according to market study, the MGM Grand could generate as much as $28 million in live-gate sales alone. Plus there are 40,000 closed-circuit seats through MGM/Mirage properties, at $100 a head could present a total package of $32 million. That numbers crushed the $25 million offer by Cowboys Stadium flat.

“It’s the MGM. It’s definite,” an article that came out of fanhouse.com quoted a source as saying, and that the choice was based on both fighters’ “familiarity with the location as well as their past success there.”
According Pacman’s lawyer, Atty. Franklin Gacal, “There’s no other place to hold it than Vegas. With all the casinos and the high-rollers coming over, it’s just hard to match. Nasa Vegas ang pera (The money is in Vegas).”

Team Pacquiao has apprehensions that Floyd “Pretty Boy” Mayweather would not follow the agreed welterweight limit of 147 lbs on March 13, 2010 just like what happened in Mayweather – Marquez fight last September. To assure that the American boxer would not mock, once again, the agreed weight limit, the Team Pacquiao ask the for the penalty of not lower than $1 million per pound in excess of 147 lbs against Mayweather.

“Our concern is that Floyd might come in at 150 lbs during the official weighin (on the eve of the fight),” said Pacquiao lawyer Franklin Gacal on Monday when asked about the measures the Filipino star is undertaking to guarantee that he doesn’t end up getting the raw end of the deal.

“Of course, we will not let this pass,” said Gacal, noting that a penalty of not lower than $1 million per pound will be slapped in excess of 147 lbs against Mayweather. “We will put that particular provision in the contract.”

When Mayweather fought Juan Manuel Marquez last September, he didn’t mind shelling out thousands of dollars after he could not meet the agreed weight of 144 lbs as he tipped the scales at 146. In the end, Mayweather was forced to cough up a total of $600,000 as every pound cost him $300,000.

Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum is now back in the US after conferring with Pacquiao last week and a meeting with Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) Chief Executive Officer Richard Schaefer is set for Monday. Schaefer has been given the authority to represent Mayweather in the negotiations for the upcoming Mayweather vs Pacquiao dream match.

Manny Pacquiao Agrees With March 13 Fight With Mayweather

by admin, on Sat, Dec 5 2009 | No Comments

You have to mark your calendars now, the most awaited dream match between the pound-for-pound king Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao and the former pound-for-pound king Floyd “Pretty Boy” Mayweather Jr. is likely to happen in March 13. In the report from GMA7, Manny Pacquiao confirms that he agreed with the March 13, 2010 Pacquiao vs Mayweather fight despite of Coach Freddie Roach comment earlier.

Manny said he agreed for the March 13 mega-fight with Mayweather and instructed promoter Bob Arum to iron out all details in order for both boxers to finally seal the deal. At this posting time, Arum is negotiating the details of the contract, like the weight where they will be fighting and the purse split, with Golden Boy’s negotiator Richard Schaeffer, whom Mayweather has tapped to deal with the camp of the seven-division world champion.

It seems to Manny that this fight is not all about the title. He just wants to bring down Mayweather because he is not setting a good example to kids. Pacquiao said the trash-talking Mayweather is not a good role model for kids, who regularly look up to athletes as their heroes. ‚ÄúHe (Mayweather) is full of thrash talk whom the children should not emulate.”

He also advised trainer Freddie Roach and his fans not to worry about his condition even though he only has less than four months after fighting Cotto, whom he defeated via a 12-round technical knockout to wrest the World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight crown.
