Win disappoints Manny and many

by Alethea, on Mon, May 9 2011 | No Comments

The entire nation joins together to celebrate the victory of Manny Pacquiao over his fight with Sugar Shane Mosley but most celebrators quickly turned sour in the lack of action in the match. Many fans were disappointed including the Pacman himself.

Although it was a sweeping victory for the People’s Champ, many booed the fight stating that it was not worth the money they had paid for as they expect to see a livelier action. Manny’s fight always promises a hard-pressed action but this match with Mosley bore the audience out of their wits. It has been labelled as Manny’s worst match-up ever. Mosley is noted to be a hesitant opponent fearing the contact of Manny’s powerful jabs. Other predicted that it was just a valiant effort in his part to remain standing all through out the 12 rounds so he avoids being hit as much as possible. His stalling did not please the audience.

The score card presents the score of 119-108, 120-108 and 120-107 in favor of the 8-division champion from the Philippines. Despite his score, Manny was not contented with his fight. Unknown to many, he had suffered leg cramps that prevents him from moving swiftly and land a jab at Mosley. Mosley had been running around in circles making it difficult for Manny to reach him with his punches. He had suffered the cramps starting from the 4th round after he had downed Mosley in the third round.

“I asked them to press my leg because it really hurts. In the last 3 rounds, it felt better,” he said.

Another event that disappointed Manny is the questionable “knock-out” that he decided after he was caught off balance in the 10th round. His felt after Mosley deliberately give him a shove and he has to make up for the lost points after that. After the fight, Referee Kenny Bayless apologize to Manny for ruling the fall in favour of Mosley.

‚ÄúEven if you didn’t get hit that’s still a knockdown. It’s already recorded in the scorecards,‚Äù said Pacquiao. ‚ÄúThat’s why I got mad. I had to recover on points.‚Äù

The ensuing round became heated as Manny strikes back with vengeance. But Mosley remains elusive. Despite of Manny taunting him to strike, he remained out of reach and the action was totally not delivered. Mosley had felt the power of the Pacman and yellow-bellied his way through the 12th round. Still, fans are expecting that maybe next time, Top Rank would provide a better match for Manny. One who is sure to entertain fans with action and not just “bromance.”

Pacquiao topped 100 best fighter in the world

by Alethea, on Sat, Jan 8 2011 | No Comments

And Pacquiao did it again! He made it to the top list of the The Ring Magazine, the equally famous magazine hailed as the Bible of the boxing world. Pacquiao cemented his claim as the top boxer in the world by conquering over all boxers and landed first place in the 100 Best Fighters in the world. Pacquiao is considered as the best because of his domination on all boxing events he attempted to engage in. Pacquiao’s sensational win against Margarito, Hatton, Cotto and Clottey solidified his status.

Despite of turbulent personal life and single fight as of 2010, Floyd Mayweather still made it to the second place. Critics assumed that his ongoing battery case prevented him from boxing. Yet, he still delivered a much talk about blow on his recent win against Shane Mosley.

Third on the list is middleweight champ Sergio Martinez whose battle royale in a ring with Paul Williams was considered as a boxing highlight in 2010. Martinez delivered victory in a unanimous decision. Martinez, who belonged to the least part of the list last year made a tremendous leap from his previous 68th place to the present 3rd this year.

The oldest fighter on the list dominated the fourth place and he is the well-known Mexican fighter Juan Manuel Marquez, 37 years old. Though he might have lost to Mayweather last 2009, he rebounded and made superb wins by defeating Juan Diaz and Michael Katsidi thereby once again claiming the best lightweight fighter in the planet.

Another Filipino graced the top 5 and the lucky one is Nonito Donaire, Jr., who knocked out three foes last year and is scheduled to challenge Fernando Montiel next month for the world bantamweight crown. He is another Filipino pride who promises to bring home the glory in the boxing arena.

Despite coveting the top spot and having 2 Filipinos in the top five, it is sad to note that only two Filipino boxer made it to the top 100 despite of numerous promising boxing champions who hailed from our country. As a matter of fact, Filipinos are overrun by Mexicans in the list despite of them being made into a minced meat by Pacquiao. Hawaiian Punch Viloria failed to make it to the list due to his TKO loss to Tamara and his split decision fight with Soto. Another disappointment is Bernabe Concepcion who was once viewed as the next promising boxing champ.

Hopefully, the fact should serve as an eye opener to our country’s sport agency to continue harnessing the talents and skills of our boxer. They should search for more talents since Philippines is a breeding ground of topnotch boxer as proven by Manny Pacquiao.

Manny vs Mosley match: only for money said critics

by Alethea, on Wed, Dec 29 2010 | No Comments

Manny expressed his excitement and state of readiness with his incoming bout to “Sugar” Shane Mosley. The bout will be held at MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 7, a much anticipated fight warmly welcomed by Pacman’s team.

He also frankly stated that it is going to be one tough fight for him so he allotted 8 weeks of training for it unlike his previous fights where he only had 3-5 weeks. But as of the present, he is enjoying his holiday being with his family at Boracay which would then followed by a tour to Japan and Australia.

“For me, I need 8 weeks training for this fight. This is going to be a difficult fight,” Pacquiao the World Boxing Council (WBC) super welterweight and World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title holder said on Thursday. Clearly, Pacquiao’s team favour the said fight.Pacquiao’s fight promoter, Bob Arum from Top Rank promotions, has announced that the Manny will fight Mosley on May 7, 2011.

“We came to a meeting of the minds,” Arum told ESPN.com. “I believe it will be an exciting fight. Shane knows how to fight and how to deal with the speed. Manny is in for a hellacious fight. I really believe styles make fights.”

However, despite the favour of the team, the fight was met with much negative reactions by boxing critics. The fight is said to be matched not for the prowess of each fighter but rather for the call of money. A lot of critics claimed that Top Rank is merely squeezing out money while they still can from this fight knowing that Mosley’s fighting skills is ebbing and so is his popularity. He had lost his previous match with Mayweather last May and had a draw with Mora last September. Top Rank was accused of making money out of the most from Mosley whose allure is already starting to fade. Arum finds himself in the midst for most of this harsh criticism.

‚ÄúArum doesn’t care. He only wants to do what is best for himself, certainly not for boxing. He is going to put Mosley in the ring with Pacquiao solely because of name. It’s a move that will squeeze out the last gasps of Mosley’s once-outstanding career so Arum can generate another big payday while doing a disservice to real boxing fans who actually care about the matchups and not just a famous but faded name,‚Äù said ESPN.com‚Äôs Dan Rafael.

Yahoo! Sport’s Kevin Iole’s reaction was even more blunt.
“You know it’s garbage. I know it’s garbage. Heck, even Bob Arum, the guy who is putting the money up to stage the Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley fight, which will take place May 7 in Las Vegas, knows it’s garbage,” he said.

Flipino boxing critics rushed to the side of Arum to defend the Manny vs Mosley tandem. Ed Dela Vega stated that in reality, boxing match is all about money. Honor and anything else comes in second.
“Boxing after all is about money. Everything else is secondary. Otherwise, they would not call it a ‘prize fight’,” said Dela Vega.

Manny Pacquiao Victory is Every Filipino Victory

by admin, on Mon, May 4 2009 | No Comments

May 3, 2009, Sunday (Philippine time), at around noon, Philippines seems to cease to spin on its axis.¬†¬† EDSA, the busiest street in Manila is almost empty of traffic, the usual sight of bystanders and vendors roaming around seems magically vanish.¬† Busses, taxis, jeepneys, tricycles, and even pedicabs that are usually scattered everywhere on the busy street anywhere in the Philippines are nowhere in sight.¬† That is the scenario here in Philippines as Manny ‚ÄúPacman‚Äù Pacquiao — Ang Pambansang Kamao ng Pilipinas‚Äîwent into the boxing ring to fight against Ricky ‚ÄúThe Hitman‚Äù Hatton.

It is precise to say that “tumigil ang ikot ng mundo sa Pilipinas” when Pacman faces the “English Bulldog”.  Economic crises, recession, poverty, swine flu, politics, Jun Lozada are all forgotten.  For a brief moment every Filipino all around the world unites to cheer for the Philippine pride.  We share same cheer, same prayer as flurry of fist were thrown by both boxers.  Ten seconds before the end of round 2, when Hatton was lying flat on floor of boxing floor I could almost physically touch the euphoria and jubilation of people around me.  It seems funny but I even saw several big guys who discreetly wiping the tears of joy.  As it is shown on evening news, Pinoys in Middle East, America and Europe take a break from their daily routine to cheer for Manny.

The victory of Manny Pacquiao is indeed a victory of every Filipino.  I can’t seem to get out of my mind the lyrics of the Pacman entrance song “Kahit saan kahit kalian. Bastat kung para sa bayan. Buhay ko ay ilalaan. Sa lupa kong sinilangan. Pilipino, Pilipino, Pilipino. Ang lahi ko! ”.  At that moment the pride, the esteem, of every Filipino was raised.  The sense of nationalism was awakened.  As I saw Hatton lying on the floor struggling for his breath, I felt the triumph.  Triumph for the Filipino race that received insults from the so-called “superior” English race. Personally I should say “Justice has been served!”
