Pacquiao, back at the PHL from four-city press tour

by Melody Claire, on Sun, Sep 11 2011 | No Comments

The four-city (Manila, New York, Los Angeles and Mexico) international media tour to promote the November 12 (November 13, Manila time) showdown between World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and challenger Juan Manuel Marquez has ended and Pacquiao is now back in the Philippines.

The hectic press tour began with Marquez being greeted by Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim and being given the symbolic key to the city. This was followed by a news conference at the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta Park which was attended by thousands last Saturday.

Pacquiao and Marquez then crossed over to New York where the widely considered pound for pound King had a duet with Dan Hill, the singer who popularized Pacman’s signature song “Sometimes when we touch.” The press conference, which was open to the public, was held at the Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers on Wednesday.

From there, the two renowned boxers travelled to Los Angeles for an event at the Beverly Hills hotel on Thursday. This is where the 32 year old, eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao responded to the claims of 38 year old, three-division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez that he should have won their two previous fights. “Everybody knows Marquez has been talking too much, so I’m thinking of a way on how to shut his mouth,” remarked Pacquiao.

For the last leg, the entourage of both fighters went to Mexico on Friday where they were surprisingly met with an estimated crowd of 30,000 excited people for a public press conference at the Plaza dela Revolucion. This is where the veteran promoter of Top Rank, Bob Arum reminisced that it was like the time when the great Muhammad Ali left America.

Pacquiao then returned to Manila to spend a week in General Santos City and Sarangani before formally opening training camp. The Filipino boxing superstar is set to train for 10 weeks to make sure that he’ll be in 100% condition whereas the Mexican warrior feels he needs to train for 12 weeks to gain speed and strength while packing in more pounds.

Pacquiao raffles 1 million cash on his birthday

by Alethea, on Fri, Dec 17 2010 | No Comments

Pacquiao sure knows how to have a party and celebrate it with a big bang that kept the guests talking even after the party. What made the bash over the top is Pacman’s surprise generous 1 million cash raffle for his guests. An awesome and better alternative compared to Mommy Dionesia’s ‘surprise’ dance number.

True, Mommy Dionesia might not be able to perform to the guests her provocative (errr… dunno if age appropriate) dance number but for sure, the guests did not mind and felt a tad bit sorry for it. The staggering 1 million cash raffle is more than enough to placate them of the missed dance number. The CD containing music for the number reportedly went missing and an intention of deliberately making it missing is yet to be confirmed.

Aside from the hefty cash prize, also raffled off were a Toyota Vios, 2 motorcycles and 3 flat screen television sets. Some of the guests who attended the party have been hard-pressed looking for stubs for a chance to win any of the prizes. So no tear from the guests for missing Mommy’s sultry dance moves.

The party was overwhelming and overflowing with lavish extravagance. Jinkee, Manny’s gracious wife reported to have spent 3 million pesos to organize the event. Excluded from this amount is the raffle prize which is a different budget. She made no hesitance in spending such loot for Manny’s 32nd birthday bash. The theme of the party is Grecian. Models entertaining the guests were body painted with gold and donned Greek inspired goddess apparels. Even Manny’s gigantic cake is inspired from a Grecian urn. Despite his lavish spending, Manny expressed no regrets stating that he has no problem in spending that big as long as he had made his friends happy.

“OK lang. Basta masaya ang mga kasama ko, OK na ako,” said Pacquiao. “Sa akin hindi importante ang materyal, sa akin importante ang mga kaibigan ko.”
