Rumors stir on upcoming Pacquiao-Mayweather bout

by xarki, on Thu, Jan 19 2012 | No Comments

courtesy of pacquiaofightsmayweathernews.blogspot.comFloyd Mayweather will soon be serving his 90-day jail sentence starting June 1 of this year after being convicted of domestic violence. His conviction has made notions of uncertainty in establishing a possible match with our very own boxing champ Manny Pacquiao.

On January 19th (Thursday) Mayweather has spoken with Pacquiao through telephone to discuss a possible bout on May this year (almost a month before he serves his jail sentence). The phone dialogue between the two boxing contenders was confirmed by the advisers of both sides through several media outlets.

Leonard Ellerbe (Mayweather’s adviser) confirmed the call to ESPN. Pacquiao’s promoter, Bob Arum did the same to Boxingscene.com. Also, Pacquiao had a formal interview in the Philippines with ABS-CBN about the call.

Pacquiao asks a 50-50 share of income from Mayweather to proceed with the bout. The Pacquiao-Mayweather boxing match will be regarded as the best-heeled fight in boxing history which is expected to reach up to a $100 Million in total if it forges ahead.

Mayweather already has a May 5 booked date at Las Vegas yet Pacquiao’s promoter aims for a later date to muster a huge outdoor arena and sell more tickets and boost profits.

Everyone has waited long enough to see this fight proceed. The rest of the world especially the Filipino boxing fans still have to wait for the final decision with whom Pacquiao will fight this year. I just hope this most-awaited clash between two pound-for-pound boxing contenders will not be just a show for the money. Otherwise it would just be a lame match on both ends.

Mayweather refused $65 million to fight Pacquiao

Another negotiation and another failed attempt to entice Floyd Mayweather to face Manny Pacquio in the ring was reported by the dismayed Top Rank promoter Bob Arum. Arum sadly announced that again, despite the hefty offer, Mayweather turned down the proposed match-up between him and People’s Champ Pacman.

According to Arum, Mayweather clearly avoids the match with Pacquiao and he wants to stay away from it as much as possible. Arum concluded that the supposed fight should have been a good comeback fight for Mayweather who had remained inactive for over a year now. The offer is very tempting yet Mayweather profusely refused the pot money which already amounts to a staggering $65 million. Naturally, the Hall of Fame promoter Arum was disappointed.

“I’m an optimist, and I always felt that they’d eventually fight. At this point, I really feel that they’d never fight,‚Äù Arum stated in a video interview.

“Recently, as recent as this week, legitimate people from Singapore offered Mayweather $65 million to fight Manny Pacquiao and he turned it down,” said the promoter, who did not name those who initiated the said deal.

‚Äú$65 million is obviously a sum Manny Pacquiao would accept. So what does that tell you? It tells you he (Mayweather) doesn‚Äôt want to fight Manny Pacquiao,” he added.

Once again, Mayweather’s delaying tactics to prevent the fight with Pacman worked. Fans, bettors and promoters were dismayed knowing that the fight would have been the richest in boxing history but it seems that it would not actually come to fruition.

Mayweather’s endless and unreasonable demands had grown tiring. He first requested for an Olympic-style drug testing which Pacquiao initially refused but eventually accepted. Despite of Pacman’s acceptance, Mayweather still backed out of the offer. He even went as far as demand a $100 million dollar purse to face the Filipino boxing champ but the amount had been termed as “ridiculous” by Arum.

This time, Arum stated that Mayweather simply fears the Pacman. He refused to stain his undefeated title. He is wise enough to realize that he would be staking his pristine record and that is not something he could easily gamble with. Arum has a final say to impart.

“He doesn‚Äôt want to fight Manny. He’s smart not to fight Manny because, truth be told, everyone who knows boxing know that Manny will beat him,” he said.

Mayweather avoided match with Pacquiao by demanding $100 million

Mayweather is sure a certified chicken as he finds another petty excuse not to face Manny Pacquiao in a ring. Both Mayweather and Pacquiao’s camp had been edging to match up the two in a much anticipated fight but Mayweather’s excuses had been unreasonable as of late.

Manny Pacquiao’s Canadian adviser, Michael Koncz, confirmed that they offered Mayweather a stunning amount of $50 million in their most recent negotiation. It would be the biggest paycheck that Mayweather would be taking home in a fight if he agrees. The controversial boxer brought a clean sum of $25million after his fight with “Golden Boy” Oscar dela Hoya. His last fight with Mosley earned him $22.5-million. Since his fight with Manny will be branded as the “fight of the century,” Top Rank decided to bring up the purse amount to woe Mayweather with what is going to a biggest paycheck he would receive for his 15-year professional career. A stunning $50 million and more if the pay per views would increase. Koncz had been generous since he revealed that a certain country offered a sure $100 million just to sponsor the coveted Pacquiao versus Mayweather fight.

“We offered $50 million to Mayweather as a guarantee[d purse]. If the pay-per-view comes in higher, Manny and Mayweather would make more,” Koncz added.

Yet, the negotiation turned awry as Mayweather demanded an over the top and ultra unreasonable price tag. He wants all $100 million for himself! After which, everything goes sour. Many fans in the boxing world stated that Mayweather’s flamboyant demand is a pathetic and cowardly sorry excuse to fight with Manny.

‚ÄúHe refused the $50 million‚Ķ It means he don’t wanna fight Manny at this point in his career. Very simple,‚Äù said Koncz.

Top Rank top honcho Bob Arum said Mayweather’s “asking price” could just be a ploy not to make the fight possible since the flamboyant American fighter is said to be afraid of staking his unbeaten record against a fighter of Pacquiao’s caliber.

“We had some negotiations before with Don King but the talks never pushed through because Mayweather is asking for a figure so high that even Pacquiao would get nothing from the fight,” Arum said.

Mayweather won the EPSY Award

This was ANC’s top story of the day.

Undefeated boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. took home this year’s Excellence in Sports Performance of the Year (ESPY) Award for Best Fighter, edging out Fighter of the Decade Manny Pacquiao and mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar Georges St. Pierre.

This is the 3rd time Mayweather won the award.

Fight fans are currently waiting for Mayweather, who is fresh from a victory versus potential Hall of Famer “Sugar” Shane Mosley, to sign a fight contract with Pacquiao for the biggest fight to date in recent years.

Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints and its quarterback Drew Brees were the big winners at the ESPY awards.

Brees received 4 trophies, including Male Athlete of the Year, Best Championship Performance and Best NFL (National Football League) Player. He also shared the team award with his super bowl champion colleagues.

Brees was chosen male athlete over National Basketball Association (NBA) stars Kobe Bryant and Lebron James.

Here’s a list of some of the other winners in the ESPYs.

Best Female Athlete: Lindsey Vonn, Olympic skier Best Comeback: Kim Clijsters, tennis player Best Coach/Manager: Phil Jackson, Los Angeles Lakers Best Record Breaking Performance: John Isner vs. Nicolas Mahut, longest match in tennis history at Wimbledon Best Track and Field Athlete: Usain Bolt Best Male Tennis Player: Roger Federer Best Female Tennis Player: Serena Williams Best Fighter: Floyd Mayweather Best Male Golfer: Phil Mickelson Best Male Action Sports Athlete: Shaun White

At the end of it, the question still remains if Mayweather still be undefeated if he and Pacquiao meet on the boxing ring?

Update Manny Pacquiao Vs Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

The Seven-division world champ and the newly elected congressman Manny Pacquiao will have to re-adjust his boxing style if he has to fight undefeated American Floyd Mayweather, Jr. According to boxing historian Mike Silver, among the things the left-handed Pacquiao will need to develop against defensive-specialist Mayweather is a busy right jab.

Pacquiao said in the interview in TV patrol that, “I know a lot of people are underestimating my capabilities, but I want them to remember me as a good leader’’.

“Pacquiao would have a tough time ahead of Mayweather. He would have to adjust his style which would be difficult for a fighter that has had over 50 fights and been successful to this point fighting his way,” he said. As for Mayweather’s defense, Silver said that would play a big role in the mega fight that boxing world has been clamoring for. He noted that Mayweather’s great reflexes and sense of anticipation could make Pacquiao miss. The American boxer’s defensive style could also frustrate Pacquiao.

“But Pacquiao fights fire with fire which means he will try to throw even more punches and that will really make it an exciting contest thanks to Manny,” Silver pointed out. The boxing historian then talked about the Pacquiao-Mayweather match-up, which failed to take place on March 13 because the fighters disagreed on the random drug testing procedure.
