Earthquake hits Indonesia and Surigao

A powerful earthquake shakes eastern Indonesian island of Maluku on Sunday, seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued. The quake was recorded with a magnitude of 7.0.

The quake struck at around 07:47 PM (Indonesian time)(1247 GMT) about 132 kilometres (82 miles) southeast of Labuha, North Maluku province, at a depth of 56 kilometres, the Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

“There has been no report of casualties so far. There was some shaking felt in several areas but it’s not strong,” the agency’s technical chief Suharjono.

On the other Surigao del Sur province in Mindanao was also hit by a quake with a magnitude of 5.0 on Sunday evening. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake was recorded at 5:50 p.m., with the epicenter traced to 38 km southeast of Tandag.

It said the quake was tectonic, and was felt at Intensity III in Lingig, Surigao del Sur; and San Francisco, Agusan del Sur.

The quake was also felt at Intensity II in Bislig, Surigao del Sur; and Barobo, Surigao del Sur.

No damage to property is reported, the residents were warned for some aftershocks.

Earthquake Hits Baguio City

Early this morning a radio station from Baguio City reported that an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.8 hit Summer Capital of the Philippines.

According to a science specialist of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the weak tremor happened around 5:20 a.m., with the center traced in San Manuel, Pangasinan, northeast of Dagupan City.

The earthquake, which was tectonic in origin, was also felt in Clark in Pampanga, the report added.

However, the Phivolcs, said it recorded no aftershocks or significant damaged caused by the quake. Baguio City is now flocked with tourist because of the celebration of Panagbenga Festival which just kicks off yesterday. And after the devastation caused by Typhoon Ondoy and Pepeng, Baguio cannot afford another calamity, yet.
