Let’s join the world in celebrating the largest environmental event in history – Earth Hour! This will be the second time that the Philippine Government will join hands in turning out the lights of government offices and buildings between 8:30-9:30 pm tonight, March 31, 2012.
The Earth Hour which began in Australia, is scheduled on the last Saturday of every March – closely coinciding with the equinox to ensure most cities are in darkness as it rolled out around the Earth.
With the energy crisis we are currently experiencing in Mindanao, this can also help us learn to appreciate the electricity we take for granted and to be able to use it more efficiently thus reducing the carbon emissions needed to produce it. These carbon emissions in turn cause global warming. Earth Hour encourages awareness that we only have one Earth and there is a need to take measures on how to save, protect and preserve its resources.
I’m planning to teach my kids on how to conserve energy during this 1 hour lights off. You can also download Earth Hour’s Activity book for kids at http://www.earthhour.org/sites/default/files/documents/Pocoyo_ActivityBook_Earth_Hour_2012.pdf
Did you know? A bicycle is a marvel of engineering efficiency, one where an investment in 22 pounds of metal and rubber boosts the efficiency of an individual mobility by a factor of three (Lester Brown, EPI as quoted from the Earth Hour website) It was timely that I saw this information from their site since I’m already planning to buy my own bicycle so I’ll be able to hit two birds with one stone: help the planet and at the same time exercise to lose weight. How about you, what do you pledge to do to keep our only home?
