The May Election Result Will Be Known Within 3 Days

The spokesperson of the Commission of Election (Comelec) said today that the result of the very first automated presidential election in the Philippines will be known within 3 days after the election. This statement was release after business groups said they feared the automated system would fail.

The Management Association of the Philippines release a statement last Wednesday urging the Comelec to adapt a parallel nationwide manual count for the president and vice president to “mitigate, if not eliminate, the skepticism of many about the credibility of the automated election system and the results that it will deliver.”

The group implies that the commission should consider for a manual count as a backup.

“We are looking at two to three days for the release of the national data … but as far as the proclamation of president and vice president (is concerned), you have to wait for congress,” Comelec spokesman James Jimenez told a forum by the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines.

Under the constitution, the Senate and the House of Representatives must convene not later than 30 days after the elections to officially count votes for the president and vice president and proclaim the winners.

Voters also will be electing senators, congressmen, provincial, city and municipal officials on May 10. These votes will also be counted using the automated system.

Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III is the top choice of Filipinos in Europe for the presidential seat. Following closely is the Sen. Manny Villlar. On the mock election conducted on several countries in Europe with 500 respondents, Aquino garnered the highest with 39% followed by Villar with % and former president Joseph Estrada was 3rd with 20%.

Europe has a total of 61,294 registered absentee voters. Italy has the most number of registered absentee voters with 23,435 and far second is the United Kingdom with only 8,552.

For the vice-presidential race, Sen. Manuel “Mar” Roxas II was way ahead at 39% followed by Sen. Loren Legarda with 24%.

However, in a separate mock elections initiated by the Philippine Association of Royal Mail Employees in United Kingdom, Manny Villar was on the lead with 81 votes or 34% and Aquino placed 2nd with 73 votes or 32%.

More than 200 members of the group took part in the mock polls in the UK.

In an outreach program conducted by the Philippine Embassy in Wales, ABS-CBN’s Balitang Europe conducted random interviews with Filipino workers on their choice for president.

The interviewed Filipino workers said they chose Aquino because he is credible and has no taint of corruption.

Some picked Sen. Richard “Dick” Gordon because of his proven track record while some prefer Bro. Eddie Villanueva claiming the country needs spiritual leadership.

Absentee voters in Europe may be small in number, but they pull serious influence on their relatives back home.
