UAAP 76th Season Finals defines the true meaning of sport

Jeric Teng of UST goes for a shot against two DLSU players.KC CruzI guess I was wrong to think that UST and La Salle were rivals at heart. That the Growling Tigers will always have the Green Archers as her formidable foe.

I really didn’t know since when I first stepped through the Thomasian doors, I came to learn that La Sallites were our born arch rivals. Like instantaneously, there’s no need for an explanation on how this came to be. Ever since then, DLSU and UST were like night and day.

The UAAP is where we settle our differences, particularly men’s basketball. The concluded season 76 has displayed a rather divergent  battle between the two universities.

When I saw this shared online video of DLSU fans cheering for UST with the “go USTe” cheer during the last few minutes of the game, then and there I said to myself “this is a rare event to happen…. that is what we call camaraderie.”

My perception of the Tigers and the Archers as two opposing forces is no longer the case. It turns out that it is really not a contest rather they balance out each other in perfect harmony. The two won’t exist without them going against each other.  This is the unusual bond that made another epic ball game in the history of Philippines college hoops. A complementing rivalry that will sure last for centuries. The final scores proved how great the game was.

Other than that, the sportsmanship hug between the Teng brothers, Jeric and Jeron even was a thing not to miss out on.

Surely, the basketball court can always be a venue for us to settle your scores but what is truly important is accepting defeat and acknowledging the great deed done by the two camps. And that’s what we call a sport.
