Dwindling support for Pacquiao regarding hate speech

courtesy of star-telegram.comThe people’s champ’s anti-same-sex-marriage speech has made a lot of people denounce the celebrated boxer.

After US President Barrack Obama’s show of support on sex equality, Manny Pacquiao has expressed his opposite sentiment regarding the subject. Initial reports say that the world champ has quoted bible verses to voice out that homosexuals should be put to death. An excerpt taken from the book of Leviticus 20:13 – “If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”

Despite the chronicled statements, Pacquiao denies citing such Biblical statements. He still confirmed his support for the gay community nevertheless he disapproves  to the idea of same-sex-marriage.

According to Granville Ampong, a Filipino-American writer, his article was misquoted by narrow-minded writers and refutes that he implied such a notion upon writing the article on his interview with Pacquiao. Ampong’s elucidation on the issue is already insignificant since the matter at hand has taken its toll.

Hundreds of netizens has already signed a petition asking Nike to drop their support of the people’s champ. “Nike is a multi-billion dollar industry and [Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender] people contribute billions to this company. It is completely unacceptable that such a high-profile company should be sponsoring a boxer who is encouraging violence towards LGBT people. Tell Nike to drop its sponsorship,” the petition read. I do not know if Pacquiao has deliberately committed this blunder so as to publicize his upcoming fight with Bradley. Definitely it is negative publicity.

The honorable representative should have chosen his words wisely. When billions of people are all eyes and ears at you, sometimes keeping your lips sealed will be the best response on a highly debateable subject.
