Tourists started to flock in and locals started to get busy in what is expected to be a dizzying array of colourful celebration as Cebu City heralds the coming of Sinulog Festival. The Sinulog festival is hailed as the most colourful, popular and grandest festivities in the entire nation embedded in deep historical root. The month long celebration is held in honor of the Santo Niño, or the child Jesus. The highlight of the event is on the third Sunday of January when the whole city of Cebu is flanked by merrymakers eager to witness the grandest dance ritual that symbolizes the city’s relinquishment of its pagantry and acceptance of Christianity.

Due to the influx of both foreign and local tourist, city administrations are in extreme precaution to safeguard the attendees. Police officers declared a 15 day gun ban within the city perimeter that started on Monday. All legal permits issued previously are not honoured due to the strict implementation of gun ban. The police, military and security guards are allowed to carry firearms as long as they are in their uniform and on duty. Police plans to deploy 2,000 operatives to attain peace and order among the otherwise unruly crowd.

Security and traffic management are also tightly observed as congestion of streets due to massive numbers of vehicles and people are projected to occur. More so, banning of alcoholic drinks in the city rotunda where performances are to be held is also implemented. This act, although much frowned by drinkers, is strictly adhered to so as to ensure that no unruly behaviors are going to take place. Additional toilet areas are also set up to accommodate the spectators.

Highlights of the festival include the Cebu Pop Music Festival, now on its 31st year where Governor Gwendolyn Garcia promises a hefty P500,000 as cash prize. The said Music festival is said to be the birthplace of most famous stars who made names in the country’s singing industry. Of course, Sinulog fluvial procession, Search for Miss Cebu 2011 and the grand parade of dances and performances serve as the crowning glory of the festivities. Sinulog sa Kabataan is also much anticipated. Although the festivities started as early as December for its street fair, the activities are scheduled to last till the end of January. Herewith is the latest schedule of activity for those who plan to join Cebu’s Sinulog festival.
