William and Kate’s “not-so-common” marriage
It might be a union of two people coming from different status in life with Kate being the commoner and William being a Prince, but that wedding theme is already overrated since, well, Cinderella’s time. But what sets them off from the other royal weddings?
For once, the groom decided to switch from the usual tradition of wearing a wedding ring. Kate might be offended with this but she is not! William is not used in wearing jewelry and we presume that Kate could probably live up with this.
Another is the highly buzzed buffet lunch. The House of Windsor had been accustomed of having a breakfast for every special occasion where guests are seated and well-served. But because of the 600 expected guests, it would be a modern twist of buffet lunch which is going to be the first ever in the Palace.
Third is the absence of wedding gifts. Royal and rich people invited from different kingdoms are expected to give opulent gifts but the couple decided instead, that the guests would donate it to 26 Royal Wedding Charity Fund.
May it be for austerity or security measures, Kate opted to arrive on Westminster Abbey on Rolls-Royce and not on the traditional horse drawn glass coach. The Rolls-Royce is equipped with modern security features like reinforced steel doors and toughened glass. The coach is also the one that brought Princess Diana to her wedding day but still it is prepped up in case the royals would change their mind.
Next is the absence of many political leaders. US President Barak Obama did not even made it to the list but since Prince William is not a reigning monarch, his wedding is not a state affair. Thus, William pushed through with his plan of a scaled-back wedding limiting the guests only to their families, close friends and other royalties.
On the positive side, Kate is the first soon-to-be queen of England who had finished a university degree. She is also the oldest bride of a future king at the age of 29. More so, she is also the first bride who is going to be older than the groom in the royal wedding history. Kate is older than William by two months.
Lastly, guests will be disappointed to know that the groom will not be planting a royal smooch with her wife in the altar of Westminster Abbey. It is a part of a protocol of the Abbey just like Princess Diana and Prince Charles. The wedding kiss will be revealed on Buckingham Palace balcony where the newlyweds will greet their audience after the wedding ceremony.
