With this news, the much sought-after boxing match between our very own boxing champ Pacquaio and Mayweather will no longer take place even before November of this year.

Instead, Mayweather will step up from the welterweight rank and fight for the super welterweight title which is currently being held by Cotto, a few weeks before he serves his 9-day jail sentence.

“Miguel Cotto is a world class fighter who can never be taken for granted and continues to prove he is one of the best in boxing,” Mayweather said.

Mayweather did not agree with Pacquiao’s deal to have the fight setup on June in order to maximize profits for the greatest boxing showdown in history.

Currently, the “People’s Champ” is still on the verge of deciding whom to fight this coming May or June. There is some unofficial news of a possible announcement this coming week.

So sorry Pinoy boxing fans! We really don’t know if Mayweather is trying to evade the challenge of facing our pound-for-pound fighter. Only through that possible match-up can we finally determine if Mayweather can really defeat the Pacman.

I wonder what will Mayweather do this time to defeat Cotto? Most of us still remember the controversial victory of this guy after landing a punch to a distracted contender. Still, we have high hopes of seeing this guy fall because of his nonsense blabbering.

For some time I marveled on the sound created by the boxers as they try to land some punches on their opponents. It never crossed my mind that the swoosh sound is created due to the fast jab cutting through invisible air just like that but rather thought of it as a sound orchestrated by the fighter himself. It does prove how strong and painful if one uppercut hits your face.

Recently, a flyweight boxer suffered an internal head injury right after engaging on a boxing match. Carlo Maquinto is currently in a coma at the Far Eastern University Hospital in Fairview. He was rushed immediately to the hospital right after he collapsed while a “draw” decision was instantaneously announced.

Maquinto fought an 8-round match with Mark Joseph Acosta at the Recom Dome (Amparo Village, Caloocan) on Saturday, January 28, 2012 which is under the Gerry Penalosa promotions. Their fight is an undercard bout for the Penalosa Jr. versus Super James Singmanassak clash.

Everyone in the arena has confirmed that Carlo was in good condition throughout the fight.

According to the boxer’s kin, Maquinto has suffered some head injuries resulting to hematoma (blood clotting in the brain) that brought him to a coma state.

Currently, Carlo is in an inoperable condition. Surgery can only lead to his immediate demise.

Relatives of Maquinto are seeking all the prayers and support for his immediate recovery.

Our boxers are always in grave danger in each and every fight. I do hope our governing sports agencies can provide some way to help ensure the safety and welfare of our world class boxers.

On January 19th (Thursday) Mayweather has spoken with Pacquiao through telephone to discuss a possible bout on May this year (almost a month before he serves his jail sentence). The phone dialogue between the two boxing contenders was confirmed by the advisers of both sides through several media outlets.

Leonard Ellerbe (Mayweather’s adviser) confirmed the call to ESPN. Pacquiao’s promoter, Bob Arum did the same to Boxingscene.com. Also, Pacquiao had a formal interview in the Philippines with ABS-CBN about the call.

Pacquiao asks a 50-50 share of income from Mayweather to proceed with the bout. The Pacquiao-Mayweather boxing match will be regarded as the best-heeled fight in boxing history which is expected to reach up to a $100 Million in total if it forges ahead.

Mayweather already has a May 5 booked date at Las Vegas yet Pacquiao’s promoter aims for a later date to muster a huge outdoor arena and sell more tickets and boost profits.

Everyone has waited long enough to see this fight proceed. The rest of the world especially the Filipino boxing fans still have to wait for the final decision with whom Pacquiao will fight this year. I just hope this most-awaited clash between two pound-for-pound boxing contenders will not be just a show for the money. Otherwise it would just be a lame match on both ends.

The gate receipts and other proceeds that will be r,ised from the match will be donated to the Philippine National Red Cross which is currently tasked in aiding our poor brothers in the south.

The Azkals will carry the name “Azkals Alyansa” for this benefit match which is expected to be led by the team co-captain Chiffy Caligdong. Joining the game will be James and Phil Younghusband, Ian Araneta, Anton del Rosario, Nate Burkey and Jason Sabio and will also include members of the developmental squad.

The Spanish team which is currently on the 12th place as they play in the Tercera Division Grupo 7 (Third Division Group 7) supplements the support given by the Spanish government. The Spanish Embassy has formerly announced its pledge in giving about 900,000 Euros to help the typhoon victims.

The benefit match will be coincided with a telethon through ABS-CBN that will be broadcasting at 2pm of the same day.

The game will be aired by ABS-CBN and Telemadrid for the Spanish viewers.

Tickets for this game are priced at P100 (exclusive of tax and other charges) up to P500. Though the prices of tickets are affordable, the organizers of the said event hope that the patrons can share or pay more than what is tagged.

Brian Viloria’s bout with Giovani Segura of Mexico on Sunday, December 11, 2011, finished off on the 8th round.

Segura started to gain some damage, as the “Hawain Punch’s” series of hooks made through as early as the second round. On the other hand, Viloria got a cut after receiving a straight right punch from his opponent.

The swelling on the Aztec Warrior’s right temple which Viloria had hit with his left hook may have diminished his visual frame causing the conclusion of the match as decided by referee Samuel Viret. The game ended in the 8th round after 29 seconds of the round used.

Viloria’s win aside from keeping his crown, added to his bout record of 29 wins and 3 loses with a total of 34 fights.

Viloria is expected to crash into the top 10 of the pound-for-pound list, joining eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao and fellow Fil-Am Nonito Donaire Jr.

More upcoming fights are laid down for Viloria by next year. Probable adversaries include Tyson Marquez (WBA champion), Pongsaklek Wonjonkam (WBC titlist) and Ivan Calderon.

The most expensive ticket is priced at P 15,000.00 and the lowest is at P 2,000.00. While other tickets are sold at P 12,500, P 10,500, P 9,500, and P 5,000 respectively. The tickets were already available for purchase as early as November 10, 2011.

Galaxy’s visit to our country does not only concern their match-up game with our very own local team but also their primary objective of conducting a football clinic for the kids under ABS-CBN’s Bantay Bata Foundation. Their planned visit has been previously stated ‘as to promote the sport of football throughout the country’ but with game ticket prices, I think our Pinoy football fans would think twice before watching the most anticipated game of the year.

With those ticket prices I would rather sit at home and watch the game on TV (even on delayed telecasts). It’s more comfortable plus less the expenses. Even the lowest ticket price is enough to pay for a good lunch for the whole family at a fine dine resto or so much to pay for a week’s grocery.

If they would really want to promote the sport to the Pinoys, better make it affordable for the majority of the population. Only those who are die-hard fanatics and financially adept can enjoy the game without doubts of shaving off that amount from their pockets.

It seems they are implying that this sport is only for the higher class people in the society then we’ll just go back to our fave sport of basketball if that is the case. We cannot force ourselves to things that we can’t even get at arm’s reach.

The world’s famous Major League Soccer team, LA Galaxy, will finally play a friendly match with our very own Philippine Azkals. The event is set to take place on the 2nd of December this year at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Azkals team manager, Dan Palami, has tried to contact the LA Galaxy team in an effort to establish a match-up between the two teams. It will be a privilege for the local team to compete with the best football team in the globe.

A formal contract signing has been made between Philippine Football President Mariano Araneta and Galaxy’s President Thomas Payne at a press conference in Makati sealing the most awaited event in the history of Philippine football.

The Azkals have set a new phase in Philippine sports as they continue to gain fans from all parts of the country through the foot ball league. Their efforts have inspired a large number of the Filipino population to take part and promote the sport.

Basketball has once dominated the sports scene since time immemorial along side with boxing. Numerous sports have also been introduced to us yet none has made it as far as basketball and boxing in molding the Philippine sports record. However, the challenge still lies on the hands of the Philippine Azkals to make football known to all.

David Beckham together with the team’s other major league foot ball stars will play against the Azkals during their promotional tour here in the Philippines. With Beckham playing in the country, there will be greater chances of getting a bigger number of audiences in an endeavor to endorse the sport.

The famous team is set to conduct a sports clinic for Bantay Banta Foundation as a way of sharing their knowledge in foot ball and expanding the team’s passion in fostering young athletes to patronize the sport.

Many people loved Manny’s winning streak in the world of professional boxing. His determination and his powerful punches won him fans not only in his own country but all over the world.

But when a thing like politics was tagged with the champ’s name, many people shook their heads. What’s with him? Isn’t being a boxing champion enough to serve the public by winning his tournaments?

Currently , the Armed Forces of the Philippines has officially granted his promotion as a ranking official of the military reserve corps from master sergeant to lieutenant colonel leading to the contradiction and questioning regarding the boxer’s advancement.

Senator Lito Lapid expressed his appreciation on Pacquiao’s promotion yet his words seem to say that he is envious of Manny’s attained military status. Sen. Lapid was given the Major rank during his political service as governor; a rank which he still holds up until now.

Sen. Ralph Recto on the other hand, gave a different point of view. He stated, “His promotion is an opportunity not a problem. Pacquiao’s job is to inspire the troops when morale is low, rein them in when discipline breaks down and temper them when the lust for bloodshed overwhelms reason.”

Despite the approval and granting of Pacquiao’s rank-up, he denies the application for his appointment.

The Filipino-American was able to hang on to the 112-pound title belt she won last year alongside Maria Elena Villalobos. Also being trained by the pound-for-pound Manny Pacquiao’s World Boxing Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach, 31-year-old Julaton did not let the younger 18-year-old Villafranca outsmart her. All three judges saw the fight in Julaton’s favor as she out pointed the Mexican: 98-91, 96-93 and 97-92. This fight hiked her ring record to 10 wins (one by knockout), two losses and one draw.

 
Julaton’s nickname ‘The Hurricane’ is aptly given since she is also one of the quickest boxers ever to win a world title in the sport, having fought only five other professional bouts before winning the International Boxing Association (IBA) Super Bantamweight title.

 
Even though the California-born fighter originally wanted to become the first ever Filipino-American boxer (both male and female) to ever get a medal in the history of the Olympic Games which was denied by the International Olympic Committee (I.O.C) and was the only sport allowed in the Olympics with out a female counterpart, Julaton never gave up and instead diverted all her efforts to making the Filipinos proud as she said “I want to show the Boxing World that I will fight anyone, anywhere, at any time and will do my utmost to represent the proud Filipino nation in the great traditions that they have come to expect.”

For the second time, the University of Philippines (UP) Pep Squad does another straight win from last year. Orchestrating a near perfect number and using a “Madonna” inspired look with their cropped blonde hair to black cone bra.

 
This is the squad’s 7th overall title in the history of the group’s participation in UAAP’s cheerleading competition.
