Remembering the great Bobby Parks

by xarki, on Thu, Apr 4 2013 | No Comments

courtesy of www.pba-online.netI am once a big fan of the Philippine basketball league. When I was young I never failed to watch the PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) games. With my old black and white National-brand tube, I had all the time to view the ball games.

I dreamt of becoming a great basketball player as most young Filipino kids would aspire during the “old days.” Of course, the basketball Legend – Sonny Jaworski (Robert Jaworski) was the most admired at that time alongside the names Ginebra or Anejo were the common shouts of the basketball aspirants.

Asides from admiring a particular team or a particular ball player, I never also failed to be a fan of some of PBA’s imports. These are the people who were tasked by various teams to showcase their basketball playing prowess amidst the local rosters. In some ways, I treated them as the “super heroes” of Philippine basketball. One whose unique features and unmistakable built will provide a boost to every team and most of the time deliver majority of the points in every ball game. Bobby Parks Sr. was one of them.

However, I was not a fan of Parks since he was not playing for my favorite team during that time. I even treated him as an opponent and antagonized his abilities just like every kid of my age. Even though this is the case, Bobby Parks was most renowned for being the best import of the PBA wen he stayed ten (10) years with Shell. Together with Benjie Paras and Ronnie Magsanoc, the three indeed made a mark in PBA history.

Bobby’s death has made me remember how great he was. And his presence in the PBA has always been a great memory for every Filipino who loved basketball.

With all the good times that you have made possible life here on earth, I pray that his soul may rest in peace with our Lord.

Pacman’s shocking defeat is a definite call for retirement

by xarki, on Thu, Dec 13 2012 | No Comments
courtesy of www.examiner.comEvery Filipino fan was surely shocked on the surprising turn of events on the recent Pacquiao-Marquez 4th title bout. With just a second left before the bell rings for the end of the 6th round, Manny receives a straight to the face reach in from counter-puncher Marquez – sending the people’s champ to the ground. This is something that caused die-hard fans and even not-so-much boxing fanatics like me to be disheartened with the results of the match.

Finding our champ face down on the boxing ring and motionless is a very demoralizing moment for almost every Pinoy. Is it time for him to step down for this second and more painful loss?

Pacman’s performance on his two recent bouts (Bradley and Marquez) has showed a rather trimmed down Manny Pacquiao – one that reflects a rather reserved and easy-going boxer compared from his earlier fights. I think Manny already has his hands full and has too much on his platter.

This fight with Marquez is no longer necessary and what I see is just a profitable match for both contenders. All we know now is that Juan Manuel Marquez is truly Pacman’s greatest adversary, one that can stop the once raging bull in the boxing ring.

Manny has done more than enough for his fellowmen and there’s nothing wrong in leaving the world of pro boxing when you have brought a memorable era of championship streaks for the Philippines.

Donaire unmatched boxer holds title

by xarki, on Mon, Oct 15 2012 | No Comments

courtesy of fightnews.comNonito Donaire successfully defended his championship belt against Japanese newcomer boxer Toshiaki Nishoka in the recently held match in Carson City California at the Home Depot Center.

Throughout the match Donaire has shown exemplary performance, challenging the skills of the south paw Nishioka. It is clear that our very own pinoy boxer has scored more on each round despite the jap fighter having tricks up his sleeve – trying to wait for the right moment to unleash and rain hell upon the now seasoned Donaire.

The bout was not as exciting as anyone hoped for. The undercard fight between Rios and Alvarado has entertained their spectators more than the main match.

Nishioka seems too careful in throwing his punches bringing him to a total of 49 versus Donaire’s 134.

The “Filipino Flash” ended the match in the 9th round with just less than 2 mins on the clock using a powerful straight right punch that stunned the Japanese boxer. Donaire retained the super bantam weight title over a technical knockout.

Ateneo bags the UAAP basketball crown 5th time!

It is a sad day for the Thomasians for not being able to grab the championship title for men’s basketball at the 75th University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season.

The Blue Eagles again showed their prowess in defending their title for the 5th time. Surpassing the 4-peat victory (also referred as the “Final Four Era”) that once the tigers had enjoyed from 1994-1997, following to UE’s (University of the East) 7-peat win (1965-1972).

Since Game 1, the rival teams executed a tight scoring game with just a few point lead from each opposing team. A proof of the tiger’s and the eagle’s enamored passion to win the men’s basketball tournament. Even creating a clash between former PBA (Phillipine Basketball Association) players and now coaches Pido Jarencio (UST) and Norman Black (Ateneo).

With the current issue lingering over at the UST campus after the controversial article on the Varsitarian, people would think that fate has turned against the proud Catholic university. Possibly, the negative publicity may have demoralized the team.

Nevertheless, the tigers have shown that they still have that same enthusiasm and the 4-peat victory is never far from over. The game ended at 65-62 in favor of Ateneo. Not a bad ball game after all.

Thomasians be proud that we made it to the second place! Continue to work harder and who knows, maybe we would make it to the top again in no time at all.

Pacman: another punch for Marquez

by xarki, on Tue, Sep 25 2012 | No Comments

courtesy of bleacherreport.comAfter that controversial boxing match with Timothy Bradley, Manny Pacquiao is here again to defend his title for the fourth time against Juan Manuel Marquez. Seriously?!

Don’t get me wrong. But what I see here is just pure money talk. Boxing fans will soon get tired of their never ending rambles just to get hold of that championship belt (or is it the sales revenue?). Well, I think it’s how things work in the world of professional boxing.

Ever since the disappointing Pacman-Bradley boxing match, many people have lost their interest in watching Manny’s fights. Honestly, I do believe on what others say about the “business” thing that happens in pro boxing.

I was a Pacman fan. Way before this guy started making fame his middle name – his amateur skills that led to a rather short pound-for-pound mash ups during his early years. Making many people (including me) amazed with Pacman’s unique abilities as a Pinoy boxer. Surely, everyone would say “wow” to this guy’s fast moves and strong punches. His street fight technique made him one hell of a boxer. But then Manny already made his mark and I think it’s time for a new blood to take over that spot.

The match is set to take place this December 2012 at Las Vegas. Though the question is, will this bout be any different from Manny’s previous fights with Marquez? Or will he regain the trust of his fans after that controversial fight with Tim Bradley? Will he be able to knockout his opponent this time?
