It seems that her fame wouldn’t come into a halt. From the acclaimed Ms. Saigon to the musical Disney Musical and Theaters, she is indeed a true artist and a diamond sparkling among the sand. Now she’s is here with a new character to be portrayed. I am talking to the one and only Ms. Lea Salonga.


World-famous Tony Award-winner Lea Salonga appears as the feline version of the woman mentioned in T.S. Eliot’s poem “Rhapsody on a Windy Night” in the upcoming and much-awaited Broadway musical, Cats.


She plays the role of Grizabella, the glamour cat who left the tribe to experience the outside world and who eventually wants to come back.


Cats is based on T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, a collection of poems about a unique tribe of cats. The show holds the record as Broadway’s second longest-running musical. It debuted in London’s West End in 1981. A year later the show opened on Broadway. For the first time, Cats will be staged in the Philippines and opens July 24, 2010 for a limited run at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo, Cultural Center of the Philippines.

The action takes place in a huge junkyard where the Jellicle cats have gathered for the annual Jellicle Ball. The main event of the Ball is the selection of the cat that will be reborn. The Jellicle cats have an opportunity to compete for that honor. Old Deuteronomy, the tribe’s elder, ends up choosing Grizabella, an old, former beauty kitten who has lost the favor of her peers.


As Grizabella, (formerly played by Elaine Paige and Betty Buckley) Lea gets to sing “Memory,” one of musical theatre’s most popular songs. Grizabella is, at the time of her appearance, a very old cat, withered by her age to the point that she no longer resembles the proud, carefree, flamboyant dancer of her youth. Her fellow Jellicles are quite repulsed by Grizabella’s disheveled condition, and taunt her.


Possibly because of this, it is Grizabella whom Old Deuteronomy consigns to the Heaviside Layer to be reborn. During her change, Grizabella sings the song “Memory”, which has been thought of by audiences as a very emotionally touching, profound, and even mysterious composition. It has been recorded by over 150 different artists, including Barry Manilow, Michael Crawford, and Barbra Streisand.

“I’ll be playing Grizabella (the non-dancer part). As for what attracts me to her, besides the big song? Grizabella is THE cat that shone in the spotlight once upon a time, and doesn’t anymore. She’s scraggy, dirty, ugly, and relives the Glory Days in her mind. It’ll be interesting to play someone that once shone, and no longer does,” noted Lea.


Far from the grizzly Grizabella that she portrays in Cats, Lea, in reality, is a few months shy of turning 40. Most women dread turning 40, but not Lea.


“I’m excited! I really look forward to turning 40,” Lea Salonga-Chien. “My late (and) early 20s, I was not happy. I was awkward. It was an awkward age for me. Yes, I had a Tony Award but it was a very weird stage of my life because I had not come into myself as a complete human being. I was like, who am I really? And I didn’t really figure it out until my mid 20s and early 30s. Now I am just really enjoying the age that I’m in. I really would not like to go back there.”


She was recently in town for the launch of Avon’s latest skincare breakthrough called Anew of which she is the brand ambassador. Come November, she will be back on the big screen with perpetual heartthrob Aga Muhlach. Although the storyline is yet to be discussed, Lea is already toying with a few ideas of her own.


“I just saw ‘It’s Complicated’ on the plane and I love that movie because the leading artists in the film were not young. They were older, and they were sexy, and smart, and they have issues, and baggage, and I’m like, ‘That’s awesome!’ I mean, we’re not spring chickens anymore so it’s got to be something that really fits us as 40-something.


From the immortals roles she played, shall we add Grizabella?

It seems that the issue are still on Kris Aquino and maybe this one is the latest among them all. Many speculations and rumors in the walls of the showbiz industry says that Kris is in a state of gestation.

Talent manager and television host Boy Abunda on Wednesday disputed an entertainment online report that his close friend, Kris Aquino, is expecting her third child.

Abunda said Aquino was “very, very surprised” when told about the online report.

“Hindi po totoo na buntis si Kris Aquino. Hindi po totoo na buntis si Kris Aquino. Uulit ulitin ko po ‘yon. She was shocked, natawa at hindi niya alam kung anong pinagggalingan, saan ang pinanggagalingan. She was very, very surprised,” Abunda told ABS-CBN News.

Aquino, whose marriage to cager James Yap is now on the rocks, is in the United States for a 3-week vacation with his 2 sons, Josh and Baby James. She will return home on Friday.

Abunda suspects that the report surfaced after Aquino’s check-up with her OB-Gynecologist, Dr. Greg Pastorfide, on June 23.

Abunda explained that the check-up had something to do with the actress-television host’s new endorsement, which is a cervical vaccine.

Aquino, according to Abunda, had her period last July 18.

Hunk actor Piolo Pascual has apologized to KC Concepcion in connection with a controversy involving Pascual’s 13-year-old son, Iñigo.

In a statement sent to “The Buzz,” Pascual denied that his son was using Twitter to “malign” Concepcion in the Internet. Pascual pointed out that Iñigo does not own a Twitter account, and that the minor’s Facebook page has been hacked.

“He never texted anybody to malign Kristina (Concepcion). He also receives prank calls from different people even while in the States. He has told me that there are people harassing him and using his name to harass other people as well through Internet,” the statement read.

Concepcion is being romantically linked to the actor since they teamed up in the Filipino adaptation of Korean telenovela “Lovers in Paris.” The actor also admitted in public that he is courting Concepcion, who is the daughter of Megastar Sharon Cuneta and first husband Gabby Concepcion.

According to tabloid reports, Iñigo was purportedly opposed to the rumored budding romance between his father and the young actress. Iñigo, who is studying in the United States, would reportedly write negative stuff about Concepcion in his Twitter account.

Pascual called on those behind the prank to stop using his son’s name “to ruin relationships.”

“Please refrain from doing so for we may seek legal counsel. My son is still a minor and private individual. I’d like to apologize to Kristina and her family. Thank you for standing by me through this situation. I appreciate your support and maturity in handling this matter. Again my apologies,” Pascual said.

Sharon defends KC

Cuneta has also broken her silence on the issue.

The megastar defended her daughter from the controversy. She branded the reports “unfair” as she admitted that the issue has hurt her family.

“Disenteng bata si KC tsaka hindi sila opisyal ni Piolo pero matagal na silang nagkikita…. pero sana tantanan na nila ang anak ko,” she said.

She said she is proud of the fact that Concepcion was raised without harboring ill feelings toward anyone.

“Alam ko matagal ng hiwalay si Piolo at mother noong bata. Ayokong mag-comment sa kanila kasi hindi ko alam ang pagpapalaki sa kanya, sabihin ko na lang ‘yong palaki ko sa anak ko… I specifically told her (Concepcion) dahil pupunta siya for the first time sa papa niya, bagong kasal ang papa niya kay Jenny (Syquia), sabi ko, ‘Be respectful,’” she said.

“And I was so proud. I wasn’t expecting it. Jenny wrote her a letter after that day saying she was happy having met KC and to have seen that she was raised wonderfully, that she had no bitterness,” she added.

Hurting

The young actress was also emotional when she addressed the issue on “The Buzz” Sunday. Concepcion burst into tears as she admitted that the write-ups had hurt her.

She also noted that it is impossible for Pascual’s son to write negative stuff about her in the Internet since the actor “is a very good father.” She added that Iñigo was nice to her when they met.

“Ginagawa niya ang lahat to be the man that his son needs kasi lumaki si PJ (Pascual) na walang tatay so gusto ni Piolo maging mabuting ama sa anak niya,” she said.

She added: “Thank you Iñigo sa mga panahon na nagkita tayo and you were nice to me. ‘Yon ang pinaghahawakan ko, ‘yong kabaitan niya noong nagkita kami.”

She said it is possible that someone is trying to ruin the relationship between father and son. She said the same thing happened to her and her father once.

She echoed Pascual’s appeal to stop using the child for their personal agenda.

She, however, said that if Iñigo indeed disliked her, she totally understands him, saying she was in his position once.

“Hindi pa confirmed kung anak niya ang nagsulat, naiintindihan ko si Iñigo kung siya talaga ‘yon dahil ako po ‘yong batang ‘yon noong bata ako… siyempre mahirap naman ‘yong mahal na mahal mo ang mga magulang mo, mahirap makitang magkahiwalay sila and mahirap i-accept kung sino man ang napapalapit sa mga magulang mo,” she said.

Concepcion, meantime, thanked her mom for teaching her not to hold any grudge while she was growing up.

This is another issue that surrounds KC nowadays. Is there some more in the next few days, we’ll see.

Well, it seems that Noynoy’s victory on winning the election, Kris Aquino pays all this with a never ending settlement of the issue between her and her ex-husband James Yap.

As Kris Aquino’s nullity of marriage case appears to go full steam, with her lawyers revealing its strong case against James Yap –notably a claim that the talk show host-actress’ grounds for separation would “shock” the public — there are developments in the story that would not help James’ cause to avoid such proceedings and save their marriage.

Such is the emergence of another claim, which was published on gossip columns in the form of blind items that James was spotted in a beauty salon with a popular Korean TV news anchor, host and radio DJ. In yet another twist to this story, Grace Lee comes into this sordid picture.

According to the reports, James and Grace were allegedly seen in the beauty parlor “together.”

Grace, who hosts the GMA-7 morning talent show “Diz Iz It” and anchors showbiz segments on QTV-11’s “News on Q” and the weekend “24 Oras” edition, denied this.

In a text message to Yahoo! Southeast Asia, Grace puts that particular “link” to James in proper perspective.

“We go to the same parlor. That’s it,” Grace said.

Grace further revealed that while they were in the same room, there was no chance by any figment of imagination that they came and left the establishment “together” at the time.

“We were never introduced. Although I saw him there twice, (there were) no hellos or anything.”

Grace would not relish the idea of being on the list of purported girlfriends of the basketball star while he was very much married to the TV talk show host and actress.

For her, it’s downright absurd.

Grace is very much happy with her real romance, a Seoul-based Korean book publisher whom she met through a friend. She said she met him right after graduating from the Ateneo when he visited Manila for a business trip.

Also the popular DJ, who hosts the widely followed “Good Times” radio program wherein she shares the top billing with fellow DJs Mo Twister and Mojo Jojo, said her relationship with her boyfriend began “way before” she first started her career in media.

And, she doesn’t mince words in describing her unnamed partner in a previous chat with this sleepless blogger.

“He was my boyfriend before I started and he sees the transition I’m going through,” Grace said. “He’s proud of what I’ve achieved and he’s also worried, which is why he’s trying to be my guide if I’m going off track emotionally, mentally.”

“He is such a strength for me. He’s such a rock in my life. He holds me down. He makes sure I’m level headed at times when I might not be. He always pulls me down to the ground whenever he feels that when something good that is happening in my life might carry me away too much. He makes sure I’m very down to earth,” Grace added.

Grace said she looks forward to marrying her boyfriend, although not in the immediate future. According to her, she would like her future family, with four children, to permanently settle in Manila.

I know that Ms. Kris supporters out there are praying for peace in Krissy’s life and James as well.

I am sure that you have heard about the drama exit of ABS-CBN’s asset Willie Revillame.

Only a few months after all the brouhaha started — with the drama of leaving because of his displeasure with a fellow network talent who castigated and ostracized his show — it seems the whole charade has ended.

Willie Revillame seems headed back to “Wowowee.”

While he remained mum about his return when ABS-CBN caught up with him in a showbiz event, it was Cristy Fermin, Willie’s longtime ally and ardent supporter, who confirmed his impending return to the popular noontime show in an interview with Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP).

Cristy told the showbiz news website that Willie had spoken to ABS-CBN president and CEO Charo Santos-Concio last week and they had ironed things out about his return. She indicated the controversial host had asked forgiveness for his actions.

“Kumpirmado… babalik siya,” Cristy declared.

Cristy added that “it seemed” the network was the party that initiated moves for his return to the show.

“Palagay ko nga, kasi si Willie, nagpapa-release, e. The mere fact na nagpapa-release, that means he has no more intention of going back,” Cristy told PEP during the taping of her weekend show biz talk show “Paparazzi” on TV5.

Cristy said that his expected return would prove he was vindicated.

“Oo! Tinanong niya ako, e, ‘Nay, ano, babalik pa ba ako?’ Sabi ko, vindication yun, Willie. Kung saan ka bumagsak, doon ka bumangon,’” Cristy further revealed in her PEP interview.

But as to the exact date of return, no one, not even Cristy could say. Reports said Willie was to re-take the “Wowowee” stage on July 31. But even Cristy was not sure. “Hindi ko alam yung July 31. Siguro yung clamor, nakita ng ABS-CBN yun,” Cristy further told PEP.

Officially however Willie remains on “indefinite leave” and ABS-CBN said it was still considering its options.

Bong Osorio, ABS-CBN Corporate Communications Head, reiterated talks about Willie’s return to “Wowowee,” were still speculations.

“Ang mga lumalabas na bali-balita tungkol kay Willie Revillame at sa Wowowee ay mga espekulasyon. Nag-usap na ang ABS-CBN management at si Willie kung ano ang options o mga posibleng gagawin pagkatapos ng kanyang break,” Bong said in a statement.

As it is, it was apparent that Willie’s discussions with Charo last week were mere exploratory and no official or final agreement was reached. Or at least the network remains locked in their own discussions for a final decision on the matter.

But all point to one conclusion. As the show bleeds in the ratings with no ideal fit to replace Willie, ABS-CBN might not have any other recourse but to consider taking Willie back instead of gambling on a new show. It took years of experimentation, from its original “Magandang Tanghali Bayan” to today’s “Wowowee” for the right formula to challenge the ever dominant “Eat Bulaga.” With Willie as its mere answer to its decades-old pursuit for noontime greatness, losing him may take more decades to come before beating “Eat Bulaga” again.

And that noontime spot is so precious to the networks because it is the main lead-in to its advertiser-laden afternoon to evening primetime programming. Losing the ratings on the noontime slot could most likely result in losing the ratings for the remainder of the day.

This is the main reason why Willie’s much vocal rival, Joey de Leon, always brags about “Eat Bulaga” traditionally taking the “whole station” to lead in the ratings. With Willie there having respectable if not triumphant numbers over his seasoned noontime rivals, ABS-CBN remains competitive if not dominant in Mega Manila, Urban Nationwide and Nationwide ratings on the afternoon and primetime blocks. Without him, ABS-CBN runs the risk of losing this competitiveness and ultimately conceding the network war. At present, however, with a series of replacements still calling the shots in “Wowowee,” the prevailing ratings slide may still not have a direct effect on ABS-CBN’s programming as its shows towards the evening primetime block remains on top of the ratings heap. But for the long term, ABS-CBN could not afford to take this trend sitting down.

As such, Cristy can now claim that extra amount of credibility she does not usually enjoy.

Can Pappie revive the Wowowee? We’ll see.

Well, I guess you have heard about Charice joining the Glee. And you must also have heard about her preparation.

Teenage Philippine singing sensation Charice Pempengco has caused an Internet uproar after having cosmetic surgery to improve her looks ahead of her debut on top US television show “Glee”.

The 18-year-old, known simply by her first name, had botox injections and minor surgery in Manila at the weekend to narrow her rounded face, with the procedure filmed and broadcast afterwards on a national television station.

“It’s one of the big preparations we are making for ‘Glee’ and of course I also want to look fresh on cam,” Charice said in a TV interview as she defended her decision to have cosmetic surgery at such a young age.

Fans, however, flooded the star’s official website, www.charicemania.com, as the issue became a hot Internet topic, with many lamenting the fact that she felt pressure to alter her face.

“At a very early age, she was made to feel inadequate and was told time and time again that, although she had a killer voice, she did not possess the looks to make it as a ‘star’,” a fan using the name Marie wrote on Charice’s website.

“I can’t even begin to imagine what that did to this child’s self-esteem.”

On another fan site, www.charicemusic.com, there was more concern for Charice.

“I hope she doesn’t change or undergo any more treatment and change herself… she’s just fine as it is… listen to yourself and not be affected by other opinions,” wrote a user calling themselves Mirana on that site.

Charice’s procedure was a top-10 global topic on the social networking site Twitter at one point this week.

Her plastic surgeon, Vicki Belo, said the procedure was meant to sculpt Charice’s naturally rounded face.

Belo said the botulinum toxin injections, which immobilise some muscles, would not have any effect on Charice’s voice.

The diminutive Filipina first gained global renown through video-sharing website YouTube and has since become a favourite of US TV talk show queen Oprah Winfrey.

“Glee” is an hour-long comedy series that follows an optimistic high school teacher as he works with a group of outcasts to revive the fortunes of the school’s performance art club.

Well, let’s just cross our fingers that Charice will raise the Filipinos pride by her apppearance on Glee.

Well, I’m sure that you have heard about Charice’s participation in the famous “Glee”. But how was her preparation? Let’s check it out.

Before that big plunge into primetime American television, a Filipino teenage singing sensation has decided to undergo the latest, state-of-the-art cosmetic surgical procedure to prepare that look set to strike fear in Rachel Berry’s eyes.

Right now Charice Pempengco still looks all so bubbly and effervescent. But, with a character set to make life miserable for the leading female character in “Glee,” it is but natural that such changes would happen, particularly with that round, beaming face.

Cosmetic surgeon Vicki Belo dedicated her Saturday schedule for a skin-tightening Botox procedure on the youngster to achieve a narrower, firmer face that would make her look apt for the breakthrough role in her fresh yet phenomenal career.

Charice herself said that such procedure was important since she will be appearing in a hugely popular, critically acclaimed and widely followed show: “Lahat po ng mga tao inaasahan nila, ‘Ano kaya ‘yong itsura ni Charice? Karapat-dapat ba siyang itapat kay Rachel Berry?’ So, siyempre sobrang laki ng pressure,” she tells ABS-CBN.

Belo herself injected Botox on her face in the jaw area right after a painless thermage procedure at her Tomas Morato clinic. This was necessary to take inches off her growing, naturally round face, Belo explained, to prepare her for ‘Glee’s’ second season, which starts filming by end of this month.

After a successful audition last month, Charice landed the plum role about a Filipino exchange student who’s attending McKinley High School and joining the school’s New Directions glee club. In the story, Charice’s character will rival Rachel, played by Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Lea Michele.

Certainly, it will be the role and the face that will have the whole world watching. As such, the slight facial transformation was necessary, Belo stressed. But the procedure she said was merely to check her widening face muscles, which will become more emphasized or worse bloated on high-definition cameras. But no facial enhancement was needed, she added.

“So what we did, we did thermage, pampaliit ng mukha ‘yon… ‘yong muscle [sa jaw area] na nagbu-bulge, puwedeng i-Botox para maging normal ulit. And then she will not chew gums anymore para maganda na siya sa ‘Glee,” Belo added in her ABS-CBN interview.

But are those procedures really that necessary, especially for an 18-year-old whose face has already been equated to that exceptional singer who wowed audiences around the world with her powerful voice?

After all, “Glee” is about sensational musical performances not Botox-stuffed celebrities.

For sure, Filipinos well support Charice in her upcoming show! Am I right pinoys?

Who really has the fault? Well, not saying that we are invading the privacy of Kris Aquino and James Yap, this topic has really been the hot seat in the past weeks.

Just imagine you are James Yap and your wife Kris Aquino not only speaks about trouble in your marriage but also announces that it is over on national television. Could you take it?

You may have just fixed your gym bag and prepare for your scheduled PBA game for the day against the Barako Energy Coffee Masters. Then you could have received a text or read a tweet, “Kris says it’s over on ‘The Buzz’.” Then you ponder those nearly five years of marriage, just 13 days short, since that secret wedding on July 10, 2005.

It would seem 500 years.

But of course, you have your faults. Admitting to getting “close” to female fans even though you know very well the history of your marriage, which includes allegations of infidelity, and the nature of your wife who would not take any such report sitting down, this really means you know you had it coming. But do you really abhor expecting that “dreaded” day of June 27 and feel you’ve lost all you’ve got?

Hardly. In fact, you may have jumped the gun a few days earlier with this reported reaction to your wife’s leaving your marital home with her kids in tow: “Whatever her decision is, I’ll accept.”

Before Kris’ big announcement on her final appearance on “The Buzz” on Sunday, June 27, it seemed James himself has also given up. It wouldn’t take a master linguist or a psychiatrist to read between the lines. He knows what the “big misunderstanding” was, why Kris and the kids left, and how seemingly gargantuan the odds were in patching up the differences: leaving it up to Kris? Definitely, a no-brainer.

For me, if indeed the Kris and James marriage is over, it’s tragic yet predictable. With a history of controversy casting dark clouds over the horizon, who would not expect the current circumstances, or the admitted troubles that have taken their toll, would not potentially end their marriage? Anyone watching the Sunday talk shows would know how Kris tried hard to save their marriage, even go through a difficult pregnancy, and endure intrigues of infidelity. But was too much information reported on the media about their relationship overwhelmed the husband? Again, if you were James could you have taken the media blitz after media blitz of the nitty-gritty details of everything that has been going on in your marriage?

If you ask me, I couldn’t have handled it. But, if I were James, I would always know that talk is priceless. What is her Queen of All Media tag for? She should have some skill in at least arriving at a solution to a marital woe—that is, of course, if the other party would communicate or at least be willing to sit down and listen. Maybe that’s the rub: time to communicate. Kris, with her all-out support for brother and president elect Noynoy Aquino that kept her in a rigorous and unforgiving campaign schedule and her usual back-to-back show biz commitments, and James, with his career as one of the top professional basketball players in the country, may not even have the time to decide what’s for breakfast.

But the problem was before them and unfortunately, and tragically, it led to Kris’ intention to call it quits. The question is, if she and James talked and decided to keep any information about their marriage away from the public as much as possible, ask Boy Abunda to mind his own business, and let the healing proceed, would June 27 be yet another slow showbiz news day?

Maybe.

But for James, if knocking down 18 points to lead all scorers for the Derby Ace Llamados in a win that sealed a playoff date with San Miguel Beer in the PBA Fiesta Cup was any indication on the same day Kris says she has given up on their marriage, it shows he may not have cared at all.

By the end of this month, the monster hit movie “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” will overpower Iron Man 2 as the no. 1 film in the country for 2010 by virtue of its opening weekend gross of P173 million, the highest debut by a Hollywood film this year.

Iron Man 2 opened in the Philippines last April 28 with first 5-days gross of P104.3 million. The top-grossing movie of all time, Avatar, ranks second in RP while Clash of the Titans is 3rd.

Filipina singing prodigy Charice Pempengco has a long-term plan that involves a different stage than the ones she has occupied since Oprah Winfrey dubbed her the “most talented girl in the world.”

Since Oprah featured Pempengco, known simply as Charice, on her talk show in 2008, the pop singer’s profile has grown steadily. Although she is just 18, her striking, powerful voice has already shared stages with the likes of tenor Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion.

Now her single “Pyramid,” which she recorded with singer Iyaz and was released in the United States in March from her self-titled debut album, has received U.S. radio airplay, and a remixed version has soared to the top of the U.S. Billboard dance charts.

But the young singer, whose career was in part propelled by initial popularity on video sharing website YouTube, told Reuters she is not getting caught up in all the attention and has a different career path she eventually wants to pursue.

“I want to be a lawyer,” she said in an interview with Reuters Television. “Being a famous singer or an international singer — that’s my dream, too, but my main goal is to be a real student and be able to graduate and be a lawyer and have my own business.”

Although her schedule over this month has her flying throughout Asia on her first big tour in South Korea, Philippines, Japan, Thailand and Malaysia, Charice said she uses her school books to come down from the rush of playing in concert.

“Some of my friends are giving me law books,” she said. “I love reading those. It’s like my relaxation.”

The singer credits her upbringing growing up in San Pedro in the Philippines and singing in amateur singing contests as the daughter of a struggling single mother for her drive and ambition.

“I’m mature because of my past,” she said, admitting she could be a little bossy. “At age of six years, my mom was getting advice from me.”

She already has movie credits to her name, including a brief cameo in the U.S. animated children’s movie “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel”.

And in late July, she will start working with the cast and producers of U.S. television series “Glee” in Los Angeles.

“I haven’t gotten the script yet but I think I’m going to play a foreign student,” she said. “I’m really nervous. But I’m trying to be normal and act like myself on the set.”
