Pacquiao, from boxing arena to House of Representatives

by admin, on Mon, Jun 28 2010 | No Comments

World champion boxer Manny Pacquiao was sworn in as congressman of his impoverished Philippine province on Monday, vowing to be even more effective in government than he is in the ring.

Trading his gloves for a traditional formal shirt, Pacquiao was among local officials who took their oaths of office in the capital of Sarangani province where he knocked out an entrenched political clan in the May 10 elections.

“I will be more effective in politics than in boxing,” he told the crowd of 3,000 after the ceremonies.
The 31-year-old fighter said he would work on improving infrastructure, medical services and security during his three-year term in parliament.

Pacquiao, who is regarded as a national hero in the boxing crazy Philippines, has said he can continue to fight even while serving as a legislator.

Boxing promoters are working to arrange a bout between Pacquiao and American Floyd Mayweather in November, to settle once and for all the fighters’ claim to be the best fighter, pound-for-pound, of their generation.

Negotiations for a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight fell through earlier this year when the American insisted on Olympic-style random drug testing, which the Filipino rejected as too intrusive before a bout.

His winnings from boxing as well as his commercial endorsements last year made Pacquiao the world’s sixth-highest paid athlete, with earnings of 40 million US dollars, according to Forbes magazine.

A ball to shoot and a family to save.

While James Yap was about to play a crucial game last Sunday night at the Big Dome for the right to slug it out with the San Miguel Beermen to get that automatic semifinals seat, his wife Kris Aquino was on her final appearance on “The Buzz,” telling the world that the marriage was over.

Before his game, he even participated in the PBA’s outreach program where they treated some 30 orphans to a book reading session with Commissioner Sonny Barrios. Journalists from other networks were present, which was unusual, but he remained oblivious to his wife’s announcement.

Come game time, as if the negative vibes crept up on him, he missed his first few free throws and couldn’t buy a basket, which is uncharacteristic of a player who was just talking about how he has put in extra work to cover the offense they’re missing with Kerby Raymundo still sidelined with an injury. Yap shares he’s been putting up at least 250 shots before practice and another 250 after. His shooting though was almost a no-show in the first half.

But it’s hard to keep a former Most Valuable Player down. He eventually made his shots and managed to come up with 18 points, 2 assists and 2 rebounds to help his team fend off the pesky Barakos. He only found out about “The Buzz” through text messages after the game.

With an average of 18.1 ppg, 35-percent 3-point shooting clip, 3.1 rebounds and 2 assists, he’s in the Top 5 amongs all local players and is the only non-Talk and Text player on the list. There’s Jimmy Alapag, Kelly Williams, Ranidel de Ocampo and Mac Cardona. Since they won the All-Filipino crown, it boosts his MVP campaign. They would need to make it to the finals to further strengthen his chances.

With all the hullabaloo he’s surrounded with, James says he never lets it affect his game. He’s a professional basketball player and when he’s on the court, all the controversies are muted out. He’s played through injuries and has managed to deliver.

Asked if he’ll attend the presidential inauguration on June 30, without batting an eyelash, he said he would go to support his brother-in-law President-Elect Noynoy Aquino. Maybe showing support and respect to the Aquino family is so important to him that he’s willing to brave the frenzy.

The newly elected Sarangani Province Congressman Manny Pacquiao, announced his transfer from the Nacionalista Party (NP) to President-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III’s Liberal Party (LP), a day before his oath-taking on Monday. He said he wanted to support the new administration to make sure that the projects of the government in Saranggani will be continuous.

“Susuportahan natin yung administrasyon na uupo ngayon, si Noynoy, dahil maganda rin naman ang hangarin niya at para din naman sa kababayan natin,” Pacquiao explained to reporters on Sunday.
He also spoke with NP standard-bearer Sen. Manuel “Manny” Villar, Jr. to explain his decision before announcing it to the public.

Before the announcing that he will be a part of the Liberal party, Pacquiao paid a courtesy call to Aquino last May at the President-elect’s home along Times Street in Quezon City where they talked about the problems of Sarangani Province as well as the power crisis in Mindanao.

Kris Aquino said “I Give Up”

After the few weeks of her silence, T.V host and actress Kris Aquino had finally give his side about her relationship to James Yap. On the Buzz last Sunday she said she had given up her marriage, “With finality I can say, ako sumuko na (I have given up),” Aquino said

She also said that this page requires a higher version browser Aquino said it was not a “spur of the moment” decision, adding that both she and husband Yap, a popular basketball player, tried long to fix whatever problems they had.”(Whatever the reason) why this marriage, on my part I’m saying, is over, the only person I will owe an explanation to, and the only person who can demand from me (why we separated), is my son,” Kris said. “He deserves to hear (the reason) only from me and only from James. We owe it to him… to explain to him,” Kris explained.

Early this year, Aquino was reported to have made a scene outside the house of a woman named Mayen Austria, with whom Yap was widely rumored to be having an affair. Their marriage also made headlines in 2007 following rumors of Yap’s yet another romantic affair, reportedly with a Belo Medical clinic receptionist.

The Star Cinema Father’s Day offering, “I’ll Be There” starring KC Concepcion, Jericho Rosales and Gabby Concepcion had a 5-day gross of P21.7

(The project’s storyline may touch on the subject of father-daughter estrangement brought by a failed relationship, but Gabby clarified that it is by no means an autobiography. He did understand though that the overwhelming interest on the film is largely generated by the drama that surrounded his off-cam relationship with KC in the past.)
