Explosive Mayon Eruption Will Greet The Holidays

by admin, on Sun, Dec 20 2009 | No Comments

mayon_lava1A major and violent eruption of Mayon Volcano could be just days away, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warned yesterday. Philvolcs raised the alert level three to alert four. This means the that an explosive eruption could take place in days, following a greater frequency of earthquakes and sulfur dioxide emissions.

Phivolcs director Renato Solidum said they raised the alert level at the volcano because of a significant increase in the number and size of volcanic earthquakes and tremors, sustained high sulfur dioxide gas emission and rumbling sound.

“This means that a hazardous explosive eruption is possible within days, thus, areas expected to be affected by such eruption will be accordingly extended,” Solidum said.

Solidum also told reporters that “what we are preparing for is a hazardous eruption and a quick descent of pyroclastic ash flow.”

He said the ash flow would remain within six kilometers of the 2,460-meter (8,070 feet) volcano.

Mayon’s Spewing More Ashes and Lava, alert level still at 3

by admin, on Sat, Dec 19 2009 | No Comments

mayonvolcano1Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) director Renato Solidum Jr. said Mayon now spews lava to as far as 4 km downslope from the crater. There were less explosion recorded within the last 24 hours, although those explosions were more powerful than the previous shooting ashes up to 2 KM high.

‚ÄúHumina nang bahagya pero sustained ang pagka-abnormal (The explosions slightly weakened but the level of abnormal activity is sustained),” Solidum added. Solidum said it is ‚Äúpossible” an eruption by Mayon will be worse than the ejection of lava from the volcano in 2006.

At this time the state volcanologists kept the alert level there at 3 for the moment. The provincial government of Albay has so far responded well with its forced evacuation of residents in the danger zone, as part of its ‚Äúzero casualty” policy.

The number of evacuees from danger areas in Mayon neared 40,000 as of Saturday as local authorities continued implementing forced evacuations.

Radio dzRH reported that as of Friday night, some 8,264 families or 39,320 people from 30 villages within the danger zone around the volcano have been moved into 24 evacuation centers.

Mayon’s danger zone extends up to eight kilometers from the volcano from the 3 kilometers danger zone which was declared few days ago.

Albay Governor Jose Salceda ordered the sustained rationing of five kilos of rice daily to each family. Reports said that Gov. Salceda also ordered local authorities to start packing up to 10,000 Noche Buena packs for families spending their Christmas in the evacuation centers.

‘I killed hundreds for the Ampatuans’ ‚Äì The Ex-Child Assassin

Anthony Taberna (ABS-CBN reported) interviews Abdul

Anthony Taberna (ABS-CBN reported) interviews Abdul

He was just 12 years old when ARMM Gov. Zaldy Ampatuan sent him to a mission to kill one of the family’s political rivals‚Äîa councilor for Sultan Kudarat. Abdul, not his real name, had been in the Ampatuan family service since he was 10. He was sent to school by the Ampatuans‚Äô from his grade 4 to 3rd year high school. When the Ampatuans allegedly ordered him to kill the councilor, then 12-year-old Abdul did not disappoint.

Abdul revealed a shocking testimony that murders were done by young boys in the service of the Ampatuan family. As a child assassin for the Ampatuans, Abdul said he killed no less than 100 people.

Abdul said he and 30 other young boys had been brought to a training camp in the mountains of South Upi municipality in Maguindanao, around 32 miles southeast of Sultan Kudarat.

According to Adbul, they were trained by Palestinians and Indonesians in combat tactics. “Para ring sundalo ‘yong training kasi iba ‘yong pagturo sa amin. Lahat nandoon na, parang paghawak ng baril, pagputok at pagtutok ng baril sa tao,” Abdul said.

THE Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group and the National Bureau of Investigation on Monday recommended the filing of rebellion charges against five members of the powerful Ampatuan family including Maguindanao Gov. Andal Ampatuan, Sr. and his son Andal Ampatuan, Jr, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Gov. Zaldy Uy Ampatuan, and 19 members of the Maguindanao Civilian Volunteer Organization, the first to be charged with the offense after President Macapagal-Arroyo placed the province under martial law.

The rebellion charges are separate from murder cases being prepared against the Ampatuan’s over election-linked massacre of 57 persons in Maguindanao last November 23, Justice Secretary Agnes Devanadera said.

But, according to lawyer Harry Roque the Proclamation 1959 imposing martial law in parts of Maguindanao has weakened the case of prosecutors since a lot of the evidence that could have been used in the murder case was obtained without warrants.

“As a lawyer of some of the victims in the massacre, our case has been weakened because a lot of the evidence gathered by authorities was taken without warrants, which we can no longer use. It’s what we call the fruit of the poisoned tree. If it is illegally obtained, we cannot use it in court,” Atty. Roque said in an interview.
