This coming December 27 and 28 this year, GM Mark Paragua will try to put the Philippines in the world chess map by breaking the Guinness World Record in simultaneous chess games played. Mark Paragua is the first Filipino to reach the ‚ÄúSuper Grandmaster‚Äù status. He was also the youngest Filipino master ever, at 9 years of age. He also became the youngest Filipino GM ever at 20 (until GM Wesley So erased it), beating out Eugenio Torre’s record by about two years.

On this attempt, Mark will be playing against 600 chess players at the same time. They dubbed this event as “1 vs. 600: Beat the MARK”. According to sports writer Noli Cruz, there will also be 400 reserves for a total of 1,000 opposing players present during the event.

The Guinness World Record for the largest number of simultaneous games played in a single session was initially set in 1996 by Swedish Grandmaster Ulf Anderson who played against 310 opponents. This record was broken in 2004 by British IM Andrew Martin, who played against 321 opponents, scoring 294 wins, 26 draws and 1 loss for a winning percentage of 95.64 percent. In August 2005, GM Susan Polgar played against 350 players simultaneously. Last February this year, the Bulgarian GM Kiril Georgiev played a simultaneous exhibition against 360 opponents.

The current record is held by Iranian GM Morteza Mahjoob, who faced 500 opponents simultaneously last August 13 at the Engelab Sports Complex in Tehran.

GM Paragua is already preparing for this record breaking event. Mark’s trainers for the “1 vs. 600: Beat the MARK” event is no other than the Asia’s First GM Eugene Torre and World Chess Cup bound GM Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr.
Organizers are looking to hold the event either at the historic Ninoy Aquino Stadium or the San Andres Gymnasium in Manila. For those who are interested to take part on this momentous event you may contact mobile no: 0919-8493648 for your inquiries.

The last minute replacement was hailed as the 2009 Mister International Philippines.  The 23-year old freelance model was just a replacement for a Mister International Philippines contestant Francis Soo who had to leave for Davao because his grandmother passed away.  Michael Manansala placement in the pageant was just a couple of days prior to the finals night.

Other winners in the contest were Thomas Anthony Malko (1st runner-up), Farzam Nasirian (2nd runner-up) and Abdul Wallace (3rd runner-up).

The winners of 2009 Mister International Philippines drew some negative feedback.  The 2nd Runner-Up Farzam Nasirian was unable to answer during the Question and Answer portion of the contest because he, admittedly, was not good in English or Tagalog. He nevertheless won because the other criteria used in the pageant pulled up his final score. The criterion for judging used was 40% for the Face, 40% for the Physique and 20% for the Personality. Judges were instructed to give scores between 70 to 100.

On the other hand the Grand Winner Michael Manansala, drew sneer from the crowd when he cited “Pinoy Big Brother” winner Will Devaughn as his role model. Manansala has a striking resemblance to Devaughn in skin color and for being a skinhead.¬† Aside from being named Mister International Philippines 2009, Manansala also won the Mister Personality Award.

Michael won P50,000.00 in cash and the privilege to represent the country in the upcoming Mister International 2009 pageant to be held later this year in Taiwan.

Interview with the Hit Man David Foster

david foster and friendsDavid Foster and Friends Tour goes to 10 cities in North America in October and November.

Garnering 15 Grammys (and an unprecedented 44 nominations), seven Canadian Juno Awards, an Emmy, three Oscar nominations and countless monster recording hits with the world’s greatest singers in a career spanning 40 years – and counting – doesn’t just happen to anyone – unless you’re a born “Hit Man” named David Foster.

Continuing the success of David Foster and Friends last May at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, TC Entertainment and ABS-CBN International’s The Filipino Channel (TFC) have signed a contract to promote 2009 Hit Man David Foster and Friends in its North American tour: Chicago, IL (Oct 21); New York, NY (Oct 23); Newark, NJ (Oct 24); Boston, MA (Oct 25); Atlanta, GA (Oct 28); Tampa, FL (Oct 30); Hollywood, FL (Nov 1); Los Angeles, CA (Nov 5); San Jose, CA (Nov 6); and Vancouver, BC (Nov 8). TFC is the official Asian Media Partner for Television.

In Foster’s recording studio in Los Angeles, TFC Production Manager John-D Lazatin sat down for an exclusive one-on-one interview with Foster. Here are gems from the Hit Man:

TFC: Is there a difference between David Foster the composer/artist and the producer?

Foster: When I go to the doctor’s office and they ask for occupation, I still put musician. I’ve been playing piano since I was 5. All the time, all the things that’s been happening in my life since I started playing piano have always been a result of my being a musician and that’s how I think of myself.

TFC: I read your book, “Hitman: Forty Years Making Music, Topping the Charts, and Winning Grammys”. Lesson number one is “Always go with what you love.” Is that always true?

Foster: The phenomenon that exists in this country and probably the whole world is that when a child turns 17, he or she all of a sudden is forced to make the biggest decision in his or her life: what am I gonna train for as a living for the rest of my life? So at 17, they go, “Hmm, do I wanna try medical school, do I wanna be a lawyer?” But you know, not everybody has a passion at 17. So, most people end up doing what they’re taught to do, not what they love to do. I was one of the fortunate ones that got to do what I love doing. By age 10, I knew what I love to do and I knew that was how I’m gonna make my living. So, my recommendation is always try to go for what you love, not what you’re taught to do.
