The people’s champ Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao will be making superhero movie which he will team-up with the Fil-Am singer Nicole Scherzinger of Pussycat Dolls.  According to Wilson Tieng, Nicole had already agreed to become Pacman’s leading lady in his upcoming movie.  The working title of the film is “Whapacman” with Tieng as producer.  Wilson Tieng is the executive producer of Solar Entertainment Corporation.

The singing group Pussycat Dolls came to Manila last June 11 for their one-night concert in Araneta Coliseum.  In her interview, Nicole had revealed that there is a possible movie team-up with the Pinoy boxing champ.  Nicole had also volunteered to the sing the Philippine National Anthem in Manny Pacquiao’s upcoming fight.

On the movie Pacman will play the role of a superhero, and Nicole will be his leading lady.  Producer of the movie revealed that the half Filipino-Greek wrestler Dave Batista is also being tapped to come out in the movie.  Whapacman is intended to be an entry in the Metro Manila Film Festival this coming December.

Well, I’m just hoping that this movie would not be as bad as the Manny Pacquiao’s first film “Anak ng Kumander” which was also an entry at the Metro Manila Film Festival last 2007.

Kinatay Cast on Cannes

Kinatay Cast on Cannes

Brillante Mendoza hits Cannes Films Festival Palme d’Or (Golden Palm) two years in a row. Brillante Mendoza is the same guy who directed the internationally acclaimed indie film Serbis. Last year, his movie Serbis competes for the highest honor in Palme d’Or, it is the first time for a Filipino film to be nominated in Cannes Film Festival since 1984.

Cannes Films Festival Palme d’Or (commonly called Golden Palm Awards), is one of the most prestigious award giving body which is known for its selection of art-house, critically artistic films. Movies selected in Golden Palm are often gritty movies that do not set out to entertain in the traditional sense of the word.

This year Brillante Mendoza makes it to Cannes once again with his entry “Kinatay (Butchered)”, and this time he scooped the Best Director award. Kinatay is the portrayal of police corruption in Manila, it included a scene of a prostitute being hacked to death. The movie traces 24 hours in the life of a trainee policeman, from his happy morning wedding to his bizarre night out with corrupt colleagues. They pick up a druggie-prostitute whose body parts they end up disposing all over the city.

Film critics are having divided opinion on the movie. It elicits both boo and applause. Mendoza was described in a weekend report as a “controversial love-him-or-hate-him director.” In a news conference following Kinatay’s Cannes screening, Mendoza said, “This is not just entertainment, these stories are real.”

Aside from Brillante Mendoza’s Kinatay, four other Filipino films made it to Golden Palm. The Raya Martin’s “Independencia”, it is the Philippines’ first entry to Un Certain Regard, the festival’s “more experimental and adventurous section.” Independencia is a historical drama set during the American Occupation. Raya Martin and Adolfo Alix Jr. film “Manila” was selected for Special Screenings category. The short “Sabongero,” by Filipino-American Janice Y. Perez was selected for the Short Film Corner. Also entered in the Short Film Corner is Aissa Peñafiel and Miguel Ocampo’s “Manong Maong,” a five-minute, 20-second animation movie.

The golden boy with the golden voice, Godwin Sotiangco is set to stage his first solo concert on July 18, 2009. Edsel first solo concert “This Is The Moment” will be held at Celebrity Theatre for the Performing Arts in Hollywood. The 11-year old Fil-Am performer was discovered last July 2007 at the US Philippine Expo in Pomona. Since then, Edsel has amazed audiences with his powerful voice that had earned him the title, “The Golden Boy with the Golden Voice.”

Edsel Godwin Sotiangco was also a runner-up in the 2008 Hollywood’s Best New Talent Award held in Kodak Theatre. He already had performed on stage with some of the brightest Filipino-American names in music industry like Apl de Ap of Black Eyed Peas, Martin Nievera, Ramielle Malubay, Jed Madela, Judy Ann Santos, Nora Aunor and many others.

Edsel possess an extraordinary high voice range which is not common for a boy. He has a soprano range voice which is very high-pitched. In fact he can easily render songs of Celine Dion, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston easily. Some of the audience that had listened to him, Edsel is the male version of Charice Pempengco. According to his voice coaches there is no boy currently performing in the Filipino community as good as Edsel in his age range and that is the reason why people call him “The Golden Boy.”

On his solo concert on July 18, Edsel will be singing sings which are arranged to suit his voice. It will be one grand night with orchestra accompaniment. There will be surprise celebrities and guest performers. There will be music videos, back-up singers and terrific dance numbers like a Las Vegas show. The concert’s going to be a real treat and parts of the proceeds will go to Bantay Bata,” that’s according to Edsel’s father Eddie Sotiangco.

Aside from practicing for his grand solo concert, Edsel is also busy recording songs every week for his album which will come out in time for the affair. “I’m so excited about my concert because it’s the first time that I will perform solo. I want to use the talents that God gave me and excel in music,” Edsel said. With his amazing talents and such faith to guide him, the golden boy will surely go a long, long way to fame and fortune. And his grand concert on July 18 is expected to be the grand moment to firmly establish Edsel Sotiangco in the performing arts industry.
