Manny Pacquiao Victory is Every Filipino Victory

May 3, 2009, Sunday (Philippine time), at around noon, Philippines seems to cease to spin on its axis.   EDSA, the busiest street in Manila is almost empty of traffic, the usual sight of bystanders and vendors roaming around seems magically vanish.  Busses, taxis, jeepneys, tricycles, and even pedicabs that are usually scattered everywhere on the busy street anywhere in the Philippines are nowhere in sight.  That is the scenario here in Philippines as Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao — Ang Pambansang Kamao ng Pilipinas—went into the boxing ring to fight against Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton.

It is precise to say that “tumigil ang ikot ng mundo sa Pilipinas” when Pacman faces the “English Bulldog”.  Economic crises, recession, poverty, swine flu, politics, Jun Lozada are all forgotten.  For a brief moment every Filipino all around the world unites to cheer for the Philippine pride.  We share same cheer, same prayer as flurry of fist were thrown by both boxers.  Ten seconds before the end of round 2, when Hatton was lying flat on floor of boxing floor I could almost physically touch the euphoria and jubilation of people around me.  It seems funny but I even saw several big guys who discreetly wiping the tears of joy.  As it is shown on evening news, Pinoys in Middle East, America and Europe take a break from their daily routine to cheer for Manny.

The victory of Manny Pacquiao is indeed a victory of every Filipino.  I can’t seem to get out of my mind the lyrics of the Pacman entrance song “Kahit saan kahit kalian. Bastat kung para sa bayan. Buhay ko ay ilalaan. Sa lupa kong sinilangan. Pilipino, Pilipino, Pilipino. Ang lahi ko! ”.  At that moment the pride, the esteem, of every Filipino was raised.  The sense of nationalism was awakened.  As I saw Hatton lying on the floor struggling for his breath, I felt the triumph.  Triumph for the Filipino race that received insults from the so-called “superior” English race. Personally I should say “Justice has been served!”

Sharon and Ai-Ai in BFF

Two of the Philippine brightest stars — The Megastar Sharon Cuneta and the Comedy Queen Ai-Ai Delas Alas — will going to make us roll with laughter and cry out hearts out with their first movie together, the BFF.  BFF which stands for “Best Friends Forever” is a Star Cinema offering for Mother’s Day and for their 16th year anniversary celebration.

Sharon and Ai-Ai will be playing a role of best friends.  Sharon will play a housewife while Ai-Ai plays a gym instructor role. As Ai-Ai helps Sharon to reduce her weight, the two develops a friendship that they equate to forever.  However Sharon’s husband, who will be portrayed by John Estrada, will be attracted to Ai-Ai who is unaware of her best friend’s marriage to John.  All hell broke loss, when Sharon discovers the affair between Ai-Ai and her husband.

This will be a refreshing change to see the Megastar in a comedy role who haven’t made a comedy movie since the “Jack en Jill” movie in 80’s which play a tomboy role together with Herbert Bautista.  BFF promises tons of good laugh and fun.  Movie goers can expect loads hilarious “word war” between Sharon and Ai-Ai.  Dialogues will be full of punch lines about Sharon’s “taba” and Ai-Ai’s “baba”.  But of course, there will be some crying too.

Best Friend Forever is directed by the Box-office Comedy Director Wenn Deramas.  Included in the cast are Chokoleit, Joy Viado, Empress Schuck, Enchong Dee, Miles Ocampo, Dj Durano, and Gina Pareño.  Best Friends Forever is scheduled to hit theaters nationwide on May 13.
