For more than two decades Pops Fernandez holds the prestigious title of being the “Concert Queen” of the Philippine music industry, but in my opinion she will not going to hold that title anymore in the very near future.  Young and talented singers are making big splash in the local music scene, I would like to specifically mention Sarah Geronimo as the greatest contender of being the next concert queen of the Philippines.

Sarah Geronimo is definitely the next one.¬† She had proven it over and over again for so many times.¬† In September 2003, Sarah released her debut album entitled “Popstar: A Dream Come True”. The album sells more than 350,000 copies and was a certified 7 times platinum. She also staged her first solo concert at the Music Museum in the same year.¬† That same year she staged a sold-out first solo concert at the Music Museum.¬† In November 2004, Geronimo released her second album entitled Sweet Sixteen. The album has since reached 3x Platinum status selling more that 150,000 copies.

Sarah performed her first major solo concert, “The Other Side” at the Araneta Coliseum where she filled the coliseum that marks her as the next potential Concert Queen. Viva Records released a live DVD album of the filmed concert in Araneta Coliseum named as “The Other Side: Live Album”, it becomes the first DVD album achieved platinum record award in the Philippines.¬† On July 14, 2007 she staged her second major solo concert at the Araneta Coliseum entitled Sarah Geronimo In Motion it was again a sold-out performance.¬† The In Motion DVD, filmed at the Araneta Coliseum was again certified platinum.

On her third major concert Sarah has proven once again, that she indeed the next Concert Queen of the Philippines.¬† The Pop Princess recently concluded concert “The Next One” at the Araneta Coliseum last November 8, 2009 was very successful as celebrities and fans alike were in full attendance at the jam-packed venue.¬† This March 2009, Sarah is about to impress the US audience.¬† She is scheduled to visit 14 cities in United States for her The Next One US Concert Tour (click here for The Next One US Concert Tour details).

Many have considered Sarah as the Miley Cyrus of the Philippines because of her multimedia appeal.  She can sing, dance and act just like Hannah Montana star and both capture the same group of audience.  They both have these appealing wholesome images that capture the heart of younger audience.  In the States if you ask a kid who is they want to be, you would likely get Miley Cyrus (or Hannah Montana) as answer.  Here in Philippines, if you ask a kid whao they want to be, you would likely get Ate Sarah as answer.  Sarah Geronimo is indeed an “idol” material and undoubtedly as the next concert queen of the Philippines.  Sarah Geronimo is The Next One!

Slumdog Millionaire Pinoy Version

Slumdog Millionaire makes a big splash in the recent Oscar’s Awards where it bags 8 awards including the most coveted Best Picture and Best Director awards.  The world wide success of Slumdog Millionaire has finally gets the Bollywood recognized by Hollywood as the one of the best and not as just as the porn producing capital of the world.  As I watched the Oscar’s last week, it gives me hope that Pinoy film could also be a “Slumdog Millionaire.”

Out of curiosity, I bought a pirated DVD (shame on me…) of Slumdog Millionaire on a “bangketa” that sell 2 for 100 which is very popular anywhere here in Philippines.  As I watched the poorly recorded copy of Slumdog Millionaire I remember that we actually have a Pinoy version of Slumdog Millionaire.  It’s entitled Mahal Kita: Final Answer! which starred Ruffa Mae Quinto and Sen. Bong Revilla, but sad to say it does not posses the cinematic quality Slumdog Millionaire.  I am not a film critic but as a movie buff I would say that the Slumdog Pinoy version is poorly done, it doesn’t even satisfy my Jologs movie taste.  Actually, I seldom see a Pinoy made movie that NOT poorly done.

Why?  Obviously, it is not because of the lack talent.  There are so many Filipino artists that have exceptional talent that is even recognized by the international award giving bodies.  There are Filipino film makers that have brilliant and innovative ideas.  Then why Filipino keeps producing substandard films?  Blame it to greedy producers and idiot audience.  They don’t care if the movie doesn’t have a decent storyline nor has a cinematic value as long they could watch their “idol” stripping, dancing or singing on the big screen.  Where could find a “hampaslupa” character that wore makeup and have signature T-shirt for a costume?  Even the boxing champ Manny Pacqiauo has a film entry in a film festival, and honestly speaking Pacman cannot throw a decent dialogue.  Take note it is a Film Festival where it is supposed to have AWARD winning films.  I felt sorry for the Philippine movie industry when I see movie that has nothing to show except for beautiful faces and beautiful bodies.

If Bollywood can be noticed and can best the Hollywood, it also gives opening to Filipino films to get our act together.  The triumph of Slumdog Millionaire means that there is some kind of future for Philippine made movies.  We have a lot to show, all we have to do is to take it seriously.  In fact there are Pinoy-made movies that gain international recognition.  Recently, Brillante Mendoza’s “Serbis” won the Best Director and Best Actress awards (for Gina Pareño) in the Pacific Meredian International Film Festival of Asian-Pacific Countries held in Vladivostok, Russia last Sept. 13 to 19.  It also won the Golden Kinnaree Award at Bangkok International Film Festival and nominated in the prestigious Cannes Film Festival for Golden Palm Awards.  Earlier this year, Mendoza’s “Tirador” won the Caligari Prize Award in Berlin’s Forum section and the Best Film, Director and Netpac Awards in Singapore. “Foster Child” won the Signis Award in Las Palmas and the Best Film and Best Actress (for Cherry Pie Picache) awards in Singapore.

This only shows that Pinoy are capable producing the best if he will put effort on it.
